The term "snobbery" did not emerge until the 19th century, long after Jesus was crucified and roughly 2 to 3 centuries after the biblical canon had been established. Although the word is relatively modern, the attitude it describes is as old as humanity itself. Snobbery is a form of pride: you can be proud without being snobbish, but you cannot be snobbish without first being proud.What distinguishes snobbery from ordinary pride is that it derives its satisfaction not merely from possessing something of value, but from possessing more of it than others or from belonging to a group regarded as superior: for instance, taking pride in being among the top 10% of the population.
