Watch Drones Deliver Coke to Workers Building Singapore Skyscrapers

Coke Sent Care Packages to Migrant Workers; Sodas Came With Messages of Encouragement and Thanks

A few weeks back, drones buzzed up to high-rises under construction in Singapore and dropped off cans of Coke to the migrant workers building the towers. Tucked into the care packages were 2,734 messages from Singaporeans thanking the tradesmen for their hard work. (who are these 2,734 fucktard sinkies? Were they PAP crassloot members, or school children forced to write these shit messages. Live in Singapore so long, I never heard ot any one go up to a FT construction worker, whether they are bangla, thai, etc to thank them)

The idea was to link two communities that don't often come into contact (who's asshole idea was this?) – Singaporean nationals and the migrant workers who travel far from their countries to build the city-state's apartment buildings, offices and schools.

Ogilvy & Mather Singapore and a non-profit, the Singapore Kindness Movement (this is non profit meh, with Minister LAwrence Wong the boss?) , worked with Coca-Cola on the project, dubbed "Happiness From the Skies."

It's part of Coke's international campaign called "Where Will Happiness Strike Next?", bringing the brand theme of happiness to places that could use some cheer. (Another Singaporean example from the campaign was a vending machine set up for stressed-out college students during exams -- it dispensed Cokes if you hugged it.)

This time, Coke approached Ogilvy and said, "we want to do something with the drone, which is the harbinger of death and destruction -- so how do you take this technology that does evil and turn it into good?" said Eugene Cheong, chief creative officer of Ogilvy & Mather Asia Pacific.

Ogilvy homed in on the idea of using drones to reach migrant workers at building sites. Coming from places including India, China, Bangladesh and Myanmar, guest workers make up about a third of the workforce in Singapore, known for its rapid development and high standard of living. The influx of foreign low-wage workers has brought societal tensions and divisions.

"These guys are a community within a community, they are walled off … and when they work they're usually up there in these high-up places that are difficult to reach," Mr. Cheong said. "We thought an appropriate use of drone technology would be to bring the messages up to them. If you use the drones to just deliver the messages to someone on the street, then it's a bad use of technology."

Hundreds of volunteers from the Singapore Kindness Movement asked ordinary Singaporeans to write messages of support to the migrant workers, then snapped photos of them holding the notes.
The photos were tied to Coke cans and delivered to more than 2,500 workers using several drones.

When the crafts landed, people weren't always sure how to react.

"There's that initial kind of trepidation with anything that isn't a part of your everyday routine -- you get skepticism, caution, you even get avoidance, and it always takes one or two really curious brave individuals to take the initiative," said Leonardo O'Grady, ASEAN director of integrated marketing communications for Coca-Cola Singapore. "Then it's like you open the floodgates."

The workers were surprised by the notes -- for some, what meant the most was the sense of being recognized, he said.

Some of Coke's most memorable viral videos in recent years have come from Asia: The brand sent overseas Filipino migrant workers home to their families for Christmas (a real tear-jerker), and it used a cross-border game involving vending machines to connect people in India and Pakistan.

Around the world, Mr. O'Grady said, Coke is "increasingly looking at what cultural role our brands can play, rather than 'what's the communication message our brands can deliver?'"

Olgivy fucking Mathers should have their offices covered in shit for this stunt.

Firstly, it is just a publicity stunt by the company to promote their brand. Secondly, the FTsh are here because they could not find jobs in their homeland, nothing to thank them for. Thirdly, those who wrote the stupid messages are sentimental fools.

Re: Question for Coca Cola S'pore- Why you airlift free Coke to FT construction worke

This episode shows one very important fact. In most other countries, companies like Coca-Cola will be targeting the locals as that is their market segment. It will also buy them some goodwill as they are seen to be helping their fellow countrymen who are down and out.

However, in SG, if they show SGreans in destitute circumstances, they are inadvertently implying that there are many poor SGreans around and hence, a slap in the face for the government. So, the scope becomes very narrow and they end up telling SGreans that there are many others worse off than them.

It is unfortunate that many companies are still oblivious to the simmering situation on the ground and are still pandering to the government. It is clear that the overwhelming sentiment now is that charity should begin at home.

Re: Question for Coca Cola S'pore- Why you airlift free Coke to FT construction worke

I have no complaints as how many locals want to be construction workers-hardly any.
The govt can bring in as many foreign construction workers as it wants, and extend it also to rubbish collectors, hawker centre cleaners, low level factory workers (jobs locals shun).

Its the PMET's we should be worried about.

Congratulations, your brainwashing is complete. There will always be people who lack the skills to perform higher-level jobs. It may surprise you that there are many people who may not aspire to become rich but would rather have an easy and monotonous job that provides enough income for them to lead a meaningful life. Construction workers can also be plumbers, electricians, carpenters, etc. These are actually jobs that require skills. Any idiot can reduce costs but it is way more important to generate revenue. The economy is now trapped in a low cost, low wage mode because of the over-emphasis on cost-cutting. This is the direct result of people who think like you. It is easy to claim that you are simply trying to get value for your money but have you ever considered that there may be other hidden costs like social and infrastructure problems?

Now, all the government needs to do is slowly make some of the higher-level jobs appear to be low-value, dead-end jobs. Viola, now they can start scolding those doing previously considered good jobs as having no aspirations. Just take a look at IT and engineering.

While it may be true that in order for SG to prosper, everyone must constantly march to the tune of the fast pace required, is it right that the interests of the state be considered more important than the interests of the individual? This is a question that needs to be addressed in order for SG to move forward. What if that individual happens to be you? What if you are the weakest link in the chain? Do you still think it is all right to discard that link and replace it with a stronger one?
