A group of armed men stormed a secure facility in Qatar used to feed and shelter stray dogs, killing 29 of them and injuring others over claims that one of them had bitten one of the men’s children.

According to the Independent, the unidentified gunmen threatened security guards with weapons before entering a secure factory area, where the stray dogs are looked by the community. The assailants are then thought to have shot 29 dogs, including puppies, leaving others badly injured.

Speaking to the Independent, a source described the incident as “horrific” with people running for cover as the group of men shot at the defenceless animals. The source added that after the shootings, a number of animals have still not been found, and locals fear they are hiding, possibly with terrible injuries.

The incident on 10 July was confirmed on social media by the Doha-based rescue charity PAWS Rescue Qatar, who mentioned that the group turned up on the first day of Eid.

“The security team tried to stop the men from shooting a group of beautiful friendly neutered dogs, but they realised that they were also putting themselves in danger also,” the organisation stated, adding that the animals posed no threat to anyone and were well looked after. PETALING JAYA: After an illustrious 11-year career with the K9 unit of the Pahang state police headquarters (IPK), tracker dog “Bad” is no more.

The male Labrador which specialised in the detection of various types of drugs died on Monday at the age of 13 years and eight months (equivalent to 91 human years).

Under the supervision of Corporal Willen Slamping @ Sirampin from the Criminal Investigation Department, Bad had two major successes in crushing drug syndicates in 2012 and 2014.

According to a Facebook post of Friends of PDRM, Bad who started his service on Aug 4, 2011, died of old age.

Bad was buried next to his colleague Tho who died on Sept 19, 2020.

To show their appreciation for Bad’s devotion, Pahang Criminal Investigation Department technical assistant division (D6) officer-in-charge Asst Supt Chia Che Chau, D6 officer Insp Nur Aishah A. Zulkefli together with other members of the K9 and D6 units of IPK Pahang were present at the send-off for Bad.

Pahang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Mohd Yusri Othman, when contacted, said a “K9 Memorial Park” would be built by upgrading the burial place of the two K9 dogs which had devoted their lives to the country.

The K9 unit is a crucial component in the police force. It has a big role in locating missing persons other than busting syndicates.

For instance, two police tracker dogs from the K9 unit of the Perak IPK received “Jasamu Dikenang” medals for their service in locating and rescuing missing persons last month.

Chulio, who has taken part in more than 50 operations, was recognised for his success in locating bodies in a search and rescue operation in Tronoh on May 11.

Rocky, meanwhile, was praised for his efforts which led to the recovery of a male ehailing driver, who was found in a weakened condition on a hill near an Orang Asli cemetery in Ulu Geruntum, Gopeng.
