A recently released — and subsequently deleted — document published by a NATO-affiliated body has sparked headlines in Europe with an apparent confirmation of a long-held open secret: U.S。 nuclear weapons are being stored in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey。

According to the draft, NATO stores some 150 nuclear B61 bombs in six bases: Kleine Brogel in Belgium, Büchel in Germany, Aviano and Ghedi-Torre in Italy, Volken in the Netherlands and İncirlik in Turkey。 While the draft does not say how many bombs each of the bases houses, the information is readily available online, albeit with varying degrees of accuracy。

The document does not attribute this information to any source。 Last week, a final version of the report was published online, and it omits the specific reference to where bombs are stored。 Instead, the report refers vaguely to aircraft that could carry nuclear weapons。

“The European Allies often cited as operating such aircraft are Belgium, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, and Turkey,” the document said, with a footnote citing a 2018 report by the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a U.S。 nongovernmental organization。

Sen。 Joseph Day, the author of the report, wrote in an email that the first version of the report was only a draft and that changes may be made to the report until it is dealt with by the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in November。 “All information used in this report is open source material,” he wrote。

As a rule, neither the United States nor its European partners discuss the location of Washington’s nuclear weapons on the continent。 “We do not comment on the details of NATO’s nuclear posture,” said a NATO official, speaking on the condition of anonymity in line with the organization’s rules for talking to the media。
“This is not an official NATO document,” the official added, noting that it was written by members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly。
“这不是北约的正式文件,”这位官员补充说道,并指出这是北约议会成员写的。

但“秘密的泄露”似乎并不是这件事的重点。这些核武器存放至今是为何?有专家担心这会引发军备竞赛,有专家认为这很危险。。。。。。

The presence of the weapons derived from an agreement reached in the 1960s and is in many ways a relic of the Cold War era — designed not only to act as deterrence to the nuclear armed-Soviet Union, but also to convince countries that they didn’t need their own nuclear weapons program。
But times have changed。 In 2016, after a coup attempt and the rapid spread of the Islamic State extremist group next door, analysts openly wondered whether Turkey was really such a great place to store nuclear weapons。

BOMBSHELL Top secret locations of 150 US nukes hidden in Europe are accidentally leaked in Nato report sparking major security fears

SECRET sites storing 150 US nukes have been accidentally revealed in a Nato report, it has been reported.
The United States and its allies in the Nato military alliance never disclose the locations of the nuclear arsenal but it appears the six sites have inadvertently disclosed.

The nuke sites where the nuclear weapons are being deployed - it has been reported they are of the B61 type pictured being tested
A draft version of the document entitled “A new era for nuclear deterrence? Modernisation, arms control and allied nuclear forces” was published earlier this year.
But Belgian newspaper De Morgen spotted that it contained details about the nuke sites.
A section on the nuclear arsenal read: “These bombs are stored at six US and European bases — Kleine Brogel in Belgium, Büchel in Germany, Aviano and Ghedi-Torre in Italy, Volkel in The Netherlands, and Incirlik in Turkey.”
The study was written by a Canadian senator Joseph Day for the Defense and Security Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
The final version of the report has now been published online with specific reference to where bombs are stored deleted.
NUKES REVEALED
Instead it refers vaguely to aircraft that could carry nuclear weapons.Senator Day told the Washington Post the original document was only a draft and “all information used in this report is open source material”.
A Nato spokesman said: “We do not comment on the details of NATO’s nuclear posture. This is not an official NATO document.”
It has been reported that the US has deployed the B61 bomb in Europe.
The presence of US nuclear weapons in Europe is a relic of the Cold War and they were originally stationed to deter Soviet aggression.
At the height of tensions, the US is believed to have deployed 110 nuclear weapons at RAF Lakenheath, which were removed in 2008.
America has indicated it may spend more than £703 billion by the 2040s upgrading its nuclear capabilities.

The United States and Russia are due to meet today to discuss the possibility of a three-way nuclear arms treaty, including China for the first time.
The talks are being held two weeks before the formal end to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty between Russia and the US.
The 1987 agreement was signed in 1987 in Washington D.C. by President Ronald Regan and Soviet Union General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev and greatly reduced nuclear weapons in Europe.

By May 1991, 2,692 missiles had been eliminated and 10 years of on-site verification inspections followed.
Donald Trump signalled the America would withdraw from the treaty because Russia had been "violating it for many years".
Earlier this year a UN arms chief said the threat of nuclear war is at its highest since World War II.

The secret locations of US nuclear weapons stored in Europe have been accidentally revealed in a report published by a Nato committee.

The document referred to the sites of roughly 150 American nuclear weapons.

“These bombs are stored at six US and European bases — Kleine Brogel in Belgium, Büchel in Germany, Aviano and Ghedi-Torre in Italy, Volkel in The Netherlands, and Incirlik in Turkey,” a section of the report seen by Belgian newspaper De Morgen said.

The information was included in an early version of the report published in April by the Defence and Security Committee of the Nato Parliamentary Assembly, titled A New Era for Nuclear Deterrence? Modernisation, Arms Control and Allied Nuclear Forces.

However, the reference has since been removed from the final version released last week.

The latest version of the report instead makes reference to aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons, adding: “The European Allies often cited as operating such aircraft are Belgium, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, and Turkey.”

A Nato official told The Washington Post the report was “not an official Nato document” and pointed out that it was written by the alliance’s parliamentary assembly.

“We do not comment on the details of Nato’s nuclear posture,” they added.

While the storing of American nuclear weapons in Europe has long been regarded as an open secret, media organisations on the continent viewed the document as confirmation.

“Finally in black and white: There are American nuclear weapons in Belgian,” the De Morgen report was headlined.

“Nato reveals the Netherlands’ worst-kept secret,” Dutch broadcaster RTL News said.

A report from a NATO committee that has since been deleted reportedly exposed the the secret locations of U.S. nuclear weapons in Europe.
The Washington Post reports that the document by a Canadian senator for the Defense and Security Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly detailed the future of the organization’s nuclear deterrence policy but accidentally exposed the open secret.
The report stated that U.S. nuclear weapons are being stored in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.
While the document titled “A new era for nuclear deterrence? Modernisation, arms control and allied nuclear forces” was originally published in April without making waves, a Belgian newspaper Tuesday published a copy of the document featuring the locations of about 150 U.S. nuclear weapons.
“These bombs are stored at six US and European bases — Kleine Brogel in Belgium, Büchel in Germany, Aviano and Ghedi-Torre in Italy, Volkel in The Netherlands, and Incirlik in Turkey,” a section of the newspaper’s report read, according to the Post.
The Post made note that the original document did not attribute this information to any source.
A final version of the report was reportedly published last week that did not have any specific references to where the weapons are stored.
“This is not an official NATO document,” a NATO official told the Post, making clear that it was written by members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
“We do not comment on the details of NATO’s nuclear posture,” the official said, remaining anonymous due to the organization’s policy for discussing matters regarding nuclear weapons with the media.
Kingston Reif, director for disarmament and threat-reduction policy at the Arms Control Association, told the Post in an email that it was no surprise to potentially discover the location of U.S. nuclear weapons in Europe.
“This has long been fairly open knowledge,” he said.
