“Progress” plant in Michurinsk reported it has mastered the production of artificial hearts for children. In fact this artificial organ is a miniature mechanical pump as complex as a sophisticated clock mechanism. It can replace the non-functioning muscle and support patient’s life till he gets a transplant operation.
It is a circular pump so patients with artificial hearts do not have pulse. The miniature child’s heart is the latest product of the plant. It is smaller and less powerful than a mechanical heart of an adult patient.
“Progress” plant makes hi-tech devices that successfully fly in ballistic missiles and even help to control combat aircrafts. Besides, it produces miniature electric motors and fine mechanisms.
Mechanical hearts must be accurate inside to avoid thrombus formation.
There is a very complex mechanism inside a titanium case, its construction makes it practically eternal. The device is provided with sensors that give commands for increased or decreased bloodflow.
Trial heart models were tested on animals – pigs and bull-calves – they feel okay. Such a heart may prolong life of its bearer for two years at least. Devices like these ones are made abroad too, but they are much more expensive, than in Russia.
