SINGAPORE: National water agency PUB says it will help six of the buildings most affected by the recent floods install barriers or humps to prevent water from flowing into basement carparks.

The PUB will provide expertise and advice on how to do this. But building owners will have to bear the costs.

The buildings include Tanglin Mall, Forum Galleria, St Regis Residences, Delfi Orchard, Orchard Towers and Orchard Parade Hotel.

This was disclosed at a meeting on Thursday between PUB and the Orchard Road Business Association (ORBA) to discuss measures to prevent flooding along Singapore's prime shopping belt.

Some 50 stakeholders, including the Singapore Tourism Board and representatives of buildings and shopping malls along Orchard Road, were present at the meeting.

In addition, the PUB will also be studying the feasibility of suggestions made by the association and the various stakeholders to prevent flooding.

These include the building of detention ponds or storage tanks under individual buildings.

These tanks would help store water during intense rainfall so that the drainage system does not get overwhelmed.

The water stored in these tanks will get pumped out into the main drainage system after the heavy flow during intense rainfall has subsided.

Another idea is to have a diversion canal to ease the burden on Stamford Canal during heavy rain.

PUB is also considering ORBA's suggestion to build green space like New York's Bryant Park that absorbs and stores excess storm water in an underground water tank while doubling up as a venue for outdoor events.

ORBA says the proposed site is a piece of state land located next to Orchard Parksuites and surrounded by Orchard Boulevard, Orchard Link and Orchard Turn.

It spans across an estimated area of 20,346 square metres with a perimeter of 645 metres.

The Orchard Road Business Association and its stakeholders say they are glad that PUB held the meeting to address their concerns, and are looking forward to the flood prevention measures being put in place for Orchard Road.
