Public Holidays

4 practicality reasons, iz goot 2 haf a holiday 4 ching meng ...

This is probably the most significant Taoist event - I earlier found out that the Moon Cake thing isn't of Taoist origin.

Cheers!

Erh!, the Taoist have so many gods...almost every month of the year, will be a Public Holiday, the entire 7th month of the Lunar Calendar also??!!:p

Well, Hinduism too is polytheist - but they settled for Deepavali as the recognised Public Holiday here. Just wondering whether Taoism can do the same.

Cheers!

As if religion plays any part in whether one can get lucky numbers or not.

I agree with you, and so will many people.

But people still are superstitious, and it it their personal right to choose where their comfort zone(s) are - as long as it doesn't infringe onto others' rights.

Cheers!

The thing about hinduism is like they combined the religion of the aryan gods like indra with those of the dravadians like siva and so on. Just like the country india that is an entire mish mash of cultures all combined together.

Are you sure about this on thaipusam? Goddamn it so it shows that kelings are violent by nature. Public holiday and they start fighting no wonder they didn't allow the drumming. Opps that racism again.

Futhermore, kelings and alcohol make strange bedfellows!

It's plain obvious you're siao or bookworm little kid. Chinese 7th moon and funerals all parangs and fights from I was kid to teenager. You think only Indians can fight? Chinese can fight to hell too. Lion dance troops are the worst. All are gangsters. You think they don't fight? What a bookworm you are. They state place and time, then bring barang-barang and parang-parang to fight it out. They don't even need a festival as excuse. Anytime can find disagreement to fight and chop.

I have never seen it. Why then does the govt not ban lion dances since it's chock full of gangsters according to you. Indians are a minority yet when they hold thaipusam it had to be taken off as a public holiday cos they were even beating up innocent drivers driving by. Now they have even banned the drumming yet lion dances are still allowed to be held and not only that the largest lion dance compeition is held at taka where troupes from everywhere take part in it and since they all are gangsters like you mentioned wouldn't it be like a large gang gathering with many gang fights yet nope never ever seen one.

From this it just goes to show that kelings are many many times more violent and unreasonable.

Christmas

Chinese have LNY, and they can be Christians, Moslems, or Atheists.

Cheers!

If this is the case, then Christmas is basically FOR EVERYONE. Shop and shop for gifts has become a fun and game for those who has the money to spare.

Christmas = Christ + Mass (Catholic's NOT Christian's, because Jesus wasn't borne during winter. Jesus' birthday is closer to mine)

Muhammad Birthday procession also rioted until banned. Now must in mosque. No more void deck and procession.

Christmas has evolved, and people in the industrialized world are ready suckers for hyped commercial merchandise. I read somewhere that the biggest per capita spenders at Christmas is in Japan!

Jesus, is a made up story. And Christmas Day on 25 Dec is Winter Solstice as far as Europeans pre-Christian times were concerned. However, it was made official by the roman emperor and since then, it had been a day we all acknolewledge that the preacher of peace, compassion, and forgiveness was born. And that is a good story.

Cheers!

To be fair to Jesus and the bible writers, they didn't make up the Christmas story. It was the Scandinavians after they converted who made up the Christmas story from the Winter Solstice festival, with Santa Claus thrown in.

Keling and alcohol make bed redundant. Keling drunkard sleep in the street. :D

Yah, usually end up on the pavements, longkangs etc. For those that make it home, it's the wives and kids that bear the brunt of these kudikarans :D:(

Sigh. If it is a made up story then everything else could have also been a fake too. Winter Solstice is in fact British (gotta do with Stonehenge ?) including Bonfire celebration ?

Chinese Winter Solstice or dong zhi 冬至 in Chinese.

As early as 2,500 years ago, about the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), China had determined the point of Winter Solstice by observing movements of the sun with a sundial. It is the earliest of the 24 seasonal division points. The time will be each December 21 or 22 according to the Gregorian calendar.

The Northern hemisphere on this day experiences the shortest daytime and longest nighttime. After the Winter Solstice, days will become longer and longer. As ancient Chinese thought, the yang, or muscular, positive things will become stronger and stronger after this day, so it should be celebrated.

The Winter Solstice became a festival during the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) and thrived in the Tang and Song dynasties (618-1279). The Han people regarded Winter Solstice as a "Winter Festival", so officials would organize celebrating activities. On this day, both officials and common people would have a rest. The army was stationed in, frontier fortresses closed and business and traveling stopped. Relatives and friends presented to each other delicious food. In the Tang and Song dynasties, the Winter Solstice was a day to offer scarifies to Heaven and ancestors. Emperors would go to suburbs to worship the Heaven; while common people offered sacrifices to their deceased parents or other relatives. The Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) even had the record that "Winter Solstice is as formal as the Spring Festival," showing the great importance attached to this day.
