It is an unfair advantage. At PSLE level, mental maturity and discipline play a big part. Imagine a sec 2-er competing with a P6-er.

Thomas Edison was a poor student in his younger days as well. His teachers gave up on him and he was schooled at home by his mother. Not all bright students will turn out successful or upright people. Look at all the RI students, the scholars who became crooks or lead deviant lives in their later years and the dropouts on the other hand who became influential people. In fact, in some places in the world, people who are overly academically gifted are deemed "dangerous".
The multitude of problems we have currently on "top" civil servants with their problems on sexual, theft, corruption... could be blamed partly on the MIW's segregation policies of choosing "leaders" based on their academic prowess alone.

Don't know why so many get so worked up over MOE latest move? As if PSLE score is that important to determine the future. It's A levels that counts for civil service. If a kid undergoes intensive tuition, can score very high PSLE score, but his innate academic ability will eventually show itself at A levels or university, and no amount of tuition will help.
So long as the kid does reasonably well, get into one of top twenty sec school, he will eventually do fine. No point artificially boosting his PSLE score, only to let him get disheartened when he realize that he does not actually have that ability to compete at the top academic level.
Very true. If you take a longer term, broader view of things, PSLE is just a blip, hardly signifcant. However, for most of the parents and kids caught in the race, it is hard not to get sucked in.
That's not true. Academic skills can be developed and reinforced. If I am a parent, I'll start them young from 7 so they can peak at 17 in time for their A levels. Every step counts.

Another big problem is the GEP scheme at P4. The top 1% of entire cohort are creamed off nationally and relocated to the GEP schools like nanyang and Henry park. Of course these Schools with GEP classes will have plenty of top PSLE students. Yet these schools are dishonest and promote themselves as if they have done such a superb job in transforming students from P1. Then all the parents Kancheong, all want their kids to enter these top schools at P1. Wonder why MOE still not doing anything about this nonsense?
