The S&P 500 closed at 1251 the Friday before the Lehman bankruptcy, down from the October 2007 high of 1565. In the 10 years since then, the S&P 500 is up 130 percent, an annual average gain of 8.7 percent and yearly total return (including dividends) of 11 percent. Those numbers are right around the very long-term average annual equity performance.
