How about they applying productivity to themselves? We have heard this 'producticty' song so long, so often, it had become a bore. From the 70's to the 80's to the 90's to now...?? supress the local wages, how to be productive? what is there to be productive? for many have nothing to look forward to, their jobs are being stolen , left, right, & centre, by the deluge of cheap foreign labours ( we are not talking about the blue collared ones), so much so that, many are are shouting, "mayday, madyday" without a voice but in their minds. and today it is "MAY DAY"!, and we are told to be productive again? 'MAY DAY, MAY DAY'!!

Higher wages can push up business costs, affecting competitiveness and may cause higher inflation, warned Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

In order to sustain better wages and higher living standards, productivity among workers must be raised.

Mr Lee said that raising productivity is "more important than ever in our mature economy, because it is the only way to upgrade ourselves and our lives."

In his May Day message, the prime minister also urged every worker, whether rank-and-file or Professionals, Managers, Executives and Technicians (PMETs), to continue to upgrade and master new skills.

The same hot air, the smelly fart. Upgrading? many graduates are driving taxi, that is called upgrading skill and training? Singaporeans paid so much to the ministers salaries to cause massive inflation, may be we should pay them less to bring inflation down.

The only way for wages to rise is a right labour market.

Productivity can rise without increase in revenue and profits will not bring about rise in wages. Increase in revenue and profits usually ends up in the business owners pockets. No business owners would readily pay above "market rate" for their staffing needs.

It is only when they need staff to fill positions which are critical to their operations, and yet unable to get staff, then they would be willing to pay more. The import of foreign works, adding supply to the work force is exactly the thing that prevent the rise of wages.

Absolutely...cheap foreign workers affect productivity

They are not worried on 'cheating' the workers, for they already have been 'cheated, for they had allowed all those Unions leaders who fought, nails & teeth for the workers well being & rights had been 'sacrificed'!, what's left are all the , "yes sirs"!. They are worried if the workers get too 'educated' for their own good, and they can't be, 'cheated' anymore! and one day, shout , "MERDEKA"! will they? do Eunuchs grow balls?

When top management increase their own salary, its call staff retention, market value or attract talent. Whereas commoners must work hard to be more productive first before talking about salary increase!?,.$&@]#^%!

If it is not because of this difference in treatment, how then can we have achieved such a huge income inequality?

only 2 things that have kept increasing for the past 20 years -
huge increase in pay and bonus of ceo and board members ;

Ass loong must be referring to the manufacturing sector.
The more you produce, the more profits you get.
But he forgot that productivity also depends on demand.
If there is no demand, no matter how much you produce also no use.
And in the service industry like sales, banking, financial and IT, service level is an intangible asset.
Cannot be measured by productivity.
In the food and beverage industry, productivity depends on how much customer you have.
If you have lots of customers, you can produce more food.
But if you have few customers, no matter how much food you produce also gone to waste.
I can go on and on to rebute his bullshit wayang on productivity but it is pointless here.
The only area I can linked his theory on productivity to increase wages is in farming.
In farming, the more food you harvest, the more food you can sell, and the more money you make.
But that is a totally different story since where got farming in singapore?
So either ass loong is still living in the pre-war colonial days, or he is just wayanging to get away with it.

PM Lee is correct. A wage increase w/o corresponding productivity increase is destructive.
It will only harm workers in the long run. Look at Europe today with their minimum wages with no jobs.

A min wage is to ensure workers can survive on their pay alone in their country according to their living standards. Europe is due to mismanagement, rather than the wage issue.

You think they bother about productivity? All they care is hiring diploma holders and foreign workers. Cheaper, better, faster. Diploma holders and foreign workers are more productive than graduates. Just look at the costs sum and technology level. Meanwhile, the workers kowtow to their bosses and are at their beck and call. It's all about squeezing workers dry and the government telling them to live within their means is the last straw.

We can survive on our pay, just don't over spend.
Survival is not an issue in Singapore. The bottom 20% are indeed very well taken cared of here. We don't see homeless or cage rooms in Singapore like other countries.
