Problems in Malaysia health care system
Waiting for long time:
As pointed out by McKinley et al. (1997), satisfaction of the legitimate demands of the patients should be the outcome of all medical care. Waiting time in outpatient clinics has been documented to be a source of dissatisfaction among patients (Hart, 1995; Gupta et al., 1993; McKinnon et al., 1998). As noted by Hart (1995), it is the one consistent feature of dissatisfaction that has been expressed with outpatient service. McKinnon et al. (1998) found that patients are less likely to be dissatisfied if their waiting time is within thirty minutes.
The most common problem that can be found in healthcare system in Malaysia is the long Waiting list most of the patient in unhappy with waiting. There are only few hospital can be found who are different. The majority of the people are unhappy for the following reasons:
The waiting to get an appointment to see the consultation
The waiting at the outpatient department in the day of the appointment
The waiting list for elective surgery
Sometimes scheduled surgery are cancelled for very many reasons
Some waiting list issues are just due to poor human resource organization.
The problem may seem like very common but it can be a great issue. If the public healthcare is not improved then people will be forced to go to private sector. This can create in imbalance in the healthcare system of Malaysia.
Lack of trained, competent doctor, nurses and paramedical:
Beside the waiting list another biggest problem with the public hospital is the level of competence of the doctor, nurses and paramedical. Due to less salary and facility most of the trained and competent doctor and nurses prefer to join the private hospitals.
Lack of control charges in private hospital:
The most popular complaint of anyone getting treatment in a private hospital is COST. As the country gets more affluent, more and more private hospitals are set up. Some private hospitals are set up as no frills hospitals where the trimmings of luxury are few and it is basically catering to the lower social economic group, to give affordable private healthcare. One easy way cut the cost of private healthcare is to regulate the cost of treatment in private hospitals. Due to many competitors there are no fixed charges for the treatment in private hospital. This can be a great weakness if the government does not control the charges in private hospital.
