Probation for chopper threat

By Elena Chong

THE woman involved in the Clementi wet market catfight with another was spared a jail sentence and placed on 36 months' probation on Monday for criminal intimidation. Teo Siang Liang, 49, a fishmonger who was suffering from acute stress reaction and chronic depression, had earlier admitted to threatening rival stallholder Koh Chiam Kee, 52, with a chopper at about noon at Clementi Avenue 3.

The court heard that before the Feb 23 incident, the two seafood stallholders had had disputes. That day, Teo went to the stall and spoke to her husband, Mr Tan You Wha, 56, before taking out a camera to take a few shots of the victim's stall. The couple and the victim then got into an argument and only stopped when the police came.

About an hour later, Teo confronted the victim and said that she wished to beat her up. While the victim was at her stall, Teo came and threatened her with the chopper. After Mar Tan had disarmed his wife, the two women had a brief scuffle, during which To pulled the victim's hair, and caused her to trip and fall onto the ground.

SINGAPORE: A fishmonger who was convicted of threatening another woman with a chopper at a Clementi wet market will be put on probation for 36 months.

Her son also had to post a bond of S$5,000 to ensure her good behaviour.

Forty-nine-year-old Teo Siang Liang got into a fight with a neighbouring fishmonger, 52-year-old Koh Chiam Kee at Block 448, Clementi Avenue 3 on February 23.

It had been reported that Ms Koh had accused Teo's husband, 56-year-old Tan You Wha, of molesting her.

However, no further action will be taken against Mr Tan.

Teo had confronted Ms Koh that day before marching over to her neighbour's stall to pick up the chopper.

She threatened Ms Koh with it and a fight soon broke out between the two women.

Teo, who pleaded guilty to the offence on August 26, turned up in court on Monday with her family members.

District Judge Soh Tze Bian warned her that she could be jailed for at least two months if she reoffends while on probation.
