Two drug traffickers believed to be part of a gang operating from inside a major prison have been arrested and 1,080,000 methamphetamine pills seized, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung said at a press conference on Wednesday.

The two suspects were identified as Suchin Riangsri, 41, and Chitthaphan Aunwongwaen, 31.

They were believed to be members of a drug ring operating from inside Bang Kwang Prison, he said. The street value of the seized drugs was about 370 million baht.

Police acted on information that a large amount of the speed pills was to be delivered to customers at a prawn pond at moo 3 in tambon Panthai Norrasing of Samut Sakhon’s Muang district. They secretly kept a close watch on the rendezvous area.

When two men drove up in two sedans, a Toyota Vios and an Audi, and parked at the pond, police moved in and arrested them

A search uncovered 1,080,000 methamphetamine pills inside the vehicles.

The two suspects said they had been given the methamphetamine pills in Ayutthaya’s Bang Pa In district, police said.

They were paid 40,000 methamphetamine pills to transport the drugs to clients in Samut Sakhon. This was their third time. The first two times, they were paid in cash, according to police.

Police on Wednesday also arrested a Zambian man, Kenneday Sichone, 36, at the Cambodian border and charged him with trafficking an illegal drug.

He was apprehended at Klong Luke border checkpoint in Sa Kaeo’s Aranyaprathet district.

Police said he had swallowed 1,200 grammes of cocaine in small packets before crossing the border.

The suspect allegedly confessed that he traveled from Brazil via Vietnam before entering Thailand through the border check point and that he was paid US$2,000 to deliver the cocaine.
