British royals served in the armed forces in combat roles...most recent with Prince Harry going to frontline in Afghanistan.
By contrast paper general pinky lee went thru military with 2 personal bodyguards 24/7 from BMT time....

singapore have no natural disaster like this. No typhoon, no hurricane, no earthquake, no volcano, no massive flooding, and arctic blast. So no politician here need to stand in front of camera to appear on front page.

which means that Spore politician has an easy job, no need to deal with natural disaster..

This is no PR stunt by the British Royal Family.. They are known to mingle well with commoners unlike our Royal FamiLEE here..

As what Narong said, The British Royal Family members served combat actions in real war.. Prince Philip served in the Navy during WW2 , Andrew saw action in the Falklands, Harry in Afghanistan.. They were in the front line and not inside any comfy control room supervising the war..

Harry earned the respects of the Gurkhas when he served together with them.. They mentioned him as humble, hardworking and he made efforts to be one of the lads..

You forgot the incident when this Ass Hole doctor picked up leaves from a flooded ground on a rainy day while campaigning in Punggol East.. He brilliantly did the act in front of flicking cameras..

The British Royal Family has the respect of the nation because, while they are privileged, they see their lives as one of service. I can only think of the Thai King as the other royal held in similar esteem. We have faux royals. Some do have good instincts but most seem to be more focused on privilege than service.

For all the spin about Prince Harry being just another soldier as he made his return to Afghanistan on Friday last week, enduring the long flight from the UK to the desert in a regular troop carrier, the truth is actually far from that.

The most obvious indicator of the uncomfortable fact of his VIP status is that Harry reportedly has armed guards accompanying him at all times inside Camp Bastion, the heavily fortified fortress city of 28,000 army troops in Helmand province, to protect him against “green on blue” attacks, in which rogue Afghan army soldiers turn their guns on allied troops.

Prince Harry was moved under guard to a secure location during a Taliban attack on Camp Bastion in Afghanistan, the defence secretary has said.

a group of armed bodyguards protected Prince Harry on the ground. maybe there is a group of Apache helicopters protecting Harry's Apache helicopter then. this just showed the pointlessness of sending Harry to Afghanistan.

So would you not protect yourself if you are a person of that stature? At least he serve in a real proper war unlike his uncle who was just helicoptering off a ship in the Falklands. Such bodyguard treatment also is present for senior UK generals.

bodyguards are present for the commanding senior officers in the war front lines. but Prince Harry is a lieutenant. sending Harry to Afghanistan was excellent PR for the British army, maybe it boasted their troops morale there, but was he making any useful contribution there or it was a real burden keeping him safe and sound ?
