Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan today said that his nation 'firmly backs' the leaders of Hamas and that the country speaks openly with them.

He has refused to brand Hamas as a terrorist group, despite Western allies of NATO-member Turkey, including the UK, and some Arab nations, doing so.

'No one can make us qualify Hamas as a terrorist organisation,' Erdogan said in a speech in the city of Istanbul.

'Turkey is a country that speaks openly with Hamas leaders and firmly backs them.'

Erdogan has been one of the most virulent critics of Israel since the start of the war in Gaza, which began after the October 7 attack Israel where Hamas killed at least 1,160 people, according to an AFP tally of official Israeli figures.

Israel has responded with a relentless ground and air offensive that the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said has killed at least 30,878 people in the besieged Palestinian enclave, mostly women and children.

Erdogan has called Israel a 'terrorist state' and accused it of conducting a 'genocide' in Gaza.

In December the Turkish president likened Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu to Adolf Hitler. Mr Erdogan also compared Israel's attacks on Gaza to the treatment of Jewish people by the Nazis.

He said Western countries supporting Israel were complicit in what he called war crimes, adding that Turkey would welcome academics and scientists facing persecution for their views on the conflict.

'They used to speak ill of Hitler,' he said. 'What difference do you have from Hitler? They are going to make us miss Hitler. Is what this Netanyahu is doing any less than what Hitler did? It is not.'

He added: 'He is richer than Hitler, he gets the support from the West. All sorts of support comes from the United States. And what did they do with all this support? They killed more than 20,000 Gazans.'
