Man to face triple murder trial

<!-- by line --> By Selina Lum
<!-- end by line -->
CHINESE national Wang Zhejian, 44, was yesterday committed to stand trial for three murders and one attempted murder in Yishun three years ago. It was the first time that Wang was charged with the murder of 36-year-old Yang Jie. He had earlier been accused of murdering 41-year-old Zhang Meng and her daughter Feng Jianyu, 17, as well as trying to murder Ms Yang's 15-year-old daughter, who is not being named as she is a minor.

The two women and two teenagers, who were all from China, lived together in a rented flat in Yishun Avenue 11, where the crimes were said to have taken place between the night of Sept 18 and the early hours of Sept 19 in 2008.
According to past reports, the bodies of Ms Zhang and her daughter were discovered that day by police in a bedroom. The other teenager, who was 13 at the time, was found with serious injuries in the kitchen toilet.

Ms Yang was found dead at the foot of the block.
Yesterday, at the preliminary inquiry into the case, witness statements, medical and forensic reports as well as more than 400 exhibits were admitted for use in the trial. The 15-year-old girl was among the witnesses who were in court to sign an undertaking to testify at the trial. She looked relaxed and had a slight smile but did not make eye contact with the man alleged to have murdered her mother and flatmates. The accused remained calm during the proceedings.

The trial of the Yishun Triple Murder case has begun and many grisly details of the incident has been revealed in court.

Three people were killed and one was seriously injured in the incident that had happened on 18 September, 2008, in a sixth floor unit at Blk 349, Yishun Avenue 11.

Chinese national Wang Zhi Jian, 42, has been charged with the murder of Mdm Zhang Meng, 42, her daughter Feng Jian Ning, 17, Mdm Yang Jie, 36, and the attempted murder of Mdm Yang's daughter, who was 14 years old at the time.

The two older women were "study mamas" from China, accompanying their children studying in Singapore.

Wang, from Tianjin, China, had come to Singapore on a social visit pass and had stayed with his lover, Mdm Zhang Meng. Mdm Zhang Meng had an estranged husband in China at the time.

On the day of the killings, Wang had quarreled with Mdm Zhang at about 10pm, and could not go to sleep. The fuming man got up, took a knife from the kitchen, and stabbed Mdm Zhang a total of 41 times in her sleep.

He only stopped stabbing her when she finally stopped moving. Awakened by her mother's screams, Feng Jian Ning came to the room to see what happened.

Wang saw Feng in the doorway and charged at her, deliberately stabbing the teen many times in her vital areas. He stopped when Feng collapsed and stopped moving, having stabbed her 41 times.

Staying in another bedroom were Mdm Yang Jie and her teen daughter, who were also awakened by the screams. Wang dashed to Mdm Yang's room and began to slash Yang's daughter. When he saw Mdm Yang trying to escape, he stopped and chased after her instead.

Mdm Yang ran into the kitchen and in her panic, sought to escape by climbing out the kitchen window. She ended up toeing a thin ledge outside the flat, clinging onto clothes-pole holders outside the window for dear life.

Wang hacked at Mdm Yang's fingers until she let go and fell to her death. Police arrived shortly after to find Mdm Yang's body on the ground near the flat's rubbish chute. After a floor-by-floor search, the police found a blood-stained padlock on the door of the sixth floor unit.

Civil Defence personnel broke down the door and found Wang in the flat with the deceased Mdm Zhang, her teen daughter Feng, and Mdm Yang's daughter, who was injured. The teen girl, still alive, was rushed to hospital and has since recovered.

In court, Wang pleaded innocence to Mdm Yang's murder and claimed that he did not intend for the murder of Mdm Zhang and her daughter Feng.

As she lay bleeding on the floor while a naked knife-wielding killer rampaged through her home, Li Meilin's only thought was: 'God, let me die.'

But the teenager lived to tell of the frenzied attack, which left her mother and two other women dead.

And after hearing her harrowing account on Tuesday, a judge told the 18-year-old it was a miracle she survived.

BACKGROUND STORY

She stumbled into the kitchen toilet and closed the foldable plastic door to keep him out.

But Wang hacked at it until it collapsed, she said, before slashing her head, face and neck until she fell to the floor.

He later came back and stabbed her again.

The Chinese national was the only one who managed to escape after Wang Zhijian - the boyfriend of one of the victims - grabbed a kitchen knife and carried out his alleged killing spree.

Triple Murder : Accused was insulted

The second day of the Yishun Triple Murder trial has revealed more details of what led to the murders.

Chinese national Wang Zhi Jian, 42, had quarreled with Mdm Zhang Meng, 42, after she asked to have a crab-feast. At the time, Wang was wearing only a pair of black briefs while lying on a mattress in the bedroom and reading a book.

Wang answered Mdm Zhang that he didn't have the money to have a crab-feast, and reminded her that they had gone to have crabs just a few days ago. He noted that they spend upwards of $100 every time they have crabs.

He also remarked to Mdm Zhang that she should not be so spendthrift. Mdm Zhang was unhappy with Wang's reply and told him that she had the right to spend his money since she was his woman. She went on to scold Wang, calling him a pauper and a parasite.

Wang was furious with Mdm Zhang, and felt that she was toying with him, treating him as a boyfriend some times, and like an animal according to her mood. This sparked off a quarrel that lasted for more than two hours. Eventually, Mdm Zhang went to bed, leaving Wang awake and fuming.

Wang was depressed and could not sleep when he thought that he does not have a home of his own, no job and also no savings. He went to the kitchen to get some air and became angrier the more he thought about the matter.

This caused Wang to pick up a knife and stabbed Mdm Zhang to death in her sleep. If found guilty of the murders, Wang will face the gallows.

Murder accused's tale of love and infidelity

By Teo Xuanwei | Posted: 25 November 2011 0621 hrs

SINGAPORE: Learning that she was a married woman whom he also suspected of seeing other men while they were dating did not snuff out his feelings for her.

And even after Madam Zhang Meng's family beat him up and threatened to kill him after discovering their illicit affair, Wang Zhijian, a Chinese national, stuck with her.

Wang's account of how his relationship with Mdm Zhang blossomed in China was heard on the third day of his trial for the murder of Mdm Zhang, 42, her daughter Feng Jianyu, 17, and their room-mate Madam Yang Jie, 36, on the night of Sept 18, 2008 at their Yishun flat. Wang is also accused of repeatedly slashing Mdm Yang's daughter, Li Meilin, now 18. She survived.

Wang, 45, told investigators he met Mdm Zhang sometime in 1996 but that it was only eight years later that she called him out of the blue for a chat.

In May or June 2005, she called him again and asked him out to a coffee house for a chat. This was when he revealed that he was recently divorced.

Wang and Mdm Zhang would rendezvous from then on about once a week to go to coffee houses or parks, usually on Thursdays when her husband, Mr Feng Jinqiang, worked the night shift as a policeman.

Their relationship remained platonic until Mdm Zhang asked him in March 2006 if he had fallen for her. Wang admitted that he indeed had feelings for her, and they became intimate a week later.

Three months later, when Mdm Zhang finally disclosed her marriage to him, Wang said it "saddened" him. He tried to break up with her but she refused.

Wang recounted that during one of their dates later, two men telephoned Mdm Zhang and asked her out. The incident caused him to suspect that "she had some other men", Wang said. He again asked to end the relationship but Mdm Zhang pleaded with him, saying that she did not want to live if he were to leave her.

As a pledge of her love for Wang, Mdm Zhang used her blood to write on a piece of paper: "I love Wang Zhijian. I want to marry him."

In return, Wang also wrote with his blood: "I (will) love her until I (die)."

When their extra-marital affair came to light in November that year, Wang said Mdm Zhang chose to leave her husband.

Two days later, Mdm Zhang's younger brother, her younger sister and her husband confronted Wang, beating him up and threatening to kill him but he managed to flee from them eventually.

In April 2007, Wang was allowed to "retire" from his job as a storekeeper in a port on medical grounds, which entitled him to a monthly pension of 2,200 yuan (S$450) until he turned 60. Wang said he chose instead to take a 310,000 yuan loan from his company and let it deduct his monthly payments as repayment. Wang said he used the money to buy branded clothes for Mdm Zhang and took her for meals at "high-class restaurants and hotels", spending 100,000 yuan after only over three months.

In May 2007, Wang tattooed a portrait of Mdm Zhang and a rose on his back as a symbol of his love. Later that month, however, Mdm Zhang's ex-husband suffered a stroke. Wang claimed that he helped Mdm Zhang bring Mr Feng for treatment for more than 10 days. Mdm Zhang broke up with him twice after that, Wang said, but they always reconciled.

In December that year, Jianyu was accepted into an English language school in Singapore and Wang kept in contact with Mdm Zhang over the phone.

By then, he started thinking that she was trying to cheat his feelings. The court heard on Wednesday that Wang allegedly went on a rampage after he quarrelled with Mdm Zhang over her demands for a meal of crab. He had arrived in Singapore from Tianjin nine days before the day of the attacks. The trial resumes next Friday. If found guilty, Wang faces the death penalty.

The Chinese national now on trial for the triple murder in Yishun could be put to death if convicted, but his only son, now in his 20s and living in China, is being kept in the dark about this.

It was the decision of the former wife of the murder suspect, Wang Zhijian, 45, not to tell their son about what his father is going through here.

This information came from Mr Wang Zhijie, 51, the suspect's brother in Tianjin. The brothers had been writing to each other regularly.

The murder trial resumes here today after a week's break.

Chinese national Wang Zhijian, on trial for a triple murder, on Tuesday insisted again that he could not remember how he went about the attacks.

When confronted with the detailed statement he gave to the police after his arrest, Wang said his account was based on 'a feeling'.

Wang, 45, is accused of killing his lover, Madam Zhang Meng, 42, her daughter Feng Jianyu, 17, and their flatmate Yang Jie, 36.

Madam Yang's daughter Li Meilin, then 15, was also slashed, but she survived. All of them were from China.

'I had no intent to kill her': Yishun triple murderer

AsiaOne
Thursday, Apr 26, 2012

SINGAPORE - Into his third day of trial, Chinese national Wang Zhijian continued to insist that he lost control of his mind and actions during the the vicious attacks that left three dead and one seriously injured.

He distanced himself from the crimes by saying that he could not remember the attacks, the Straits Times reported.

Cornered by the prosecution who questioned why then he could give detailed blow-by-blow accounts to the police of how he stabbed to death the three, he defended his stance by saying that the details were guesses based on 'a feeling'.

Wang stands accused of murdering his lover, Madam Zhang Meng, 42; her daughter Feng Jianyu, 17; and their flatmate Yang Jie, 36, in the Yishun flat all four were staying in.

He also attempted to kill Madam Yang's daughter Li Meilin, then 15, but she survived.

His statement to the police after the attack was so detailed that it included descriptions such as Wang's left knee being on the mattress while he thrust his knife in his right hand into Madam Zhang's abdomen at a 45-degree angle.

Wang said that his account was due to his imagination, intuition, or 'a feeling' of what things should have happened.

On Tuesday in court, Justice Chan Seng Ong commented that Wang should try his hand at the lottery, since his intuition was so accurate.

Wang also told the court he suffered a series of accidents in his youth, during some of which he lost consciousness.

These include two electrocutions, two traffic accidents, falling from a tree and a sudden fainting spell at home.

Chinese national sentenced to death for murder in Yishun

By Claire Huang | Posted: 30 November 2012 1538 hrs

wz3011e.jpg

SINGAPORE: A Chinese national who killed three women in a flat in Yishun four years ago has been sentenced to death.

Wang Zhijian, 46, was tried for the murder of his 42-year-year lover, Madam Zhang Meng, her 17-year-old daughter Feng Jianyu, and their flatmate Yang Jie, 36.

Wang also slashed Madam Yang's daughter, Li Meilin, who was 15 years old at the time of the incident in 2008.

On Friday, High Court Judge Chan Seng Oon found Wang guilty of the murder of one of the three victims.

In his verdict, Justice Chan accepted Wang's defence of diminished responsibility for the deaths of Madam Zhang and her daughter Feng. He found Wang guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in these two instances.

But Justice Chan found Wang guilty of murdering Madam Yang.

In a 52-page judgement, he said Wang had harboured so much hatred and anger towards Madam Zhang that it was logical to expect that after he had stabbed her, it "would have assuaged his anger".

The judge said this was not the case.

He said by the time Wang moved on to kill Madam Yang, he would have had an opportunity to cool down and be mentally responsible for his actions.

He said Wang was able to exercise his rational judgement, and that "his intention to have Yang killed to silence her as a potential informant and witness was clear".

The judge said Wang's mental responsibility was no longer substantially impaired by this time.

His acts, the judge said, were "deliberate, purposeful, directed and methodical".

So Justice Chan rejected the defence's argument that when Wang cut Madam Yang's fingers, he had not regained his mental capacity.
