NTU don wins China prize
By Reico Wong
A NANYANG Technological University's don has won a scientific computing prize, becoming one of only three scientists in the world to receive this prestigious award given by China this year.
NTU said on Thursday that Associate Professor Tai Xue-Cheng, from its School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, has been awarded the eighth Feng Kang Prize in Scientific Computing by China, which honours Chinese scientists in China and abroad for significant contributions biennially.
He has been working on numerical analysis and computational mathematics, specifically image processing, in recent years.
His mathematical modelling has been used to restore images that have been degraded due to wear and tear in their original looks. He has also developed new models for MRI medical image processing as well as other medical and industrial applications.
Expressing 'surprise' and 'honour' over the prize, Assoc Prof Tai, who is to receive his award in Guangzhou on Monday, said: 'This encourages me to continue to strive for excellence in my research and to seek solutions for challenging scientific problems.
'I feel that it is fun and rewarding to use mathematics knowledge to solve difficult problems from the industry and modern technology.'
The Feng Kang Prize is dedicated to the memory of the late Professor Feng Kang (1920-1993), a pioneer in the field of Chinese computational mathematics. He was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as the founding director of the Computing Centre of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
