Indian FT Integration Guide
I am no fan of the cheap and poorly qualified FTs but the Govt has to issue a guide and then hold an exam before their residency visa is confirmed. In view of poor habits and practices that run along cultural lines, guide must be culture specific ie Indian, PRC, Pinoy etc. It should be sugar coat but must be direct and clear.
Here is the version for Indian FTs
1. Speaking and writing English does not mean you are cultured, smart or well mannered.
2. Only monkeys allow their young to run wild and unsupervised.
3. When boarding public transport prams must be folded.
4. Prams are meant for kids until the age of 2.
5. Bargaining is not the norm everywhere. Ask a local when bargaining is appropriate and it does not go into cents.
6. When talking to a person of another culture remember point 1. There are no exceptions
7. Forgeries, falsifications, providing misleading information, exaggeration, making extravagant claims, claiming credit for work not done, making untenable promises etc are not permitted in any form in the work place or in contract negotiations, enrolling kids in school or volunteering for grassroots activities.
8. Recruiting and staffing family members, friends, schoolmates etc from the same race with without clear measurable merit is not acceptable in this country unless you are with the PAP.
9. Maids are considered as service providers and not beast of burden. This applies all around the world.
10. When patronising food outlets for your safety be extra polite and courteous to service staff. Be quiet, children must be well behaved and seated, the pram must not block access to others and preferably folded.
11. When placing order for food follow convention. Fast food outlets are just that. If there is a queue, plan your order ahead, avoid special orders and have the appropriate payment ready. It might be helpful to practice this at home a few times to get it right. Restaurants do entertain special orders but again follow convention such as advising on vegan meals, gluten free or reduction in condiments such as sugar and salt. Anything else increases one safety risk when consuming food.
12. Being a vegan has no correlation to good upbringing, values, moral compass or even intelligence. It is an ancient cultural practice to spell exclusiveness.
13. Walking abreast as a family on pavement or pathways shows poor upbringing and considered highly inconsiderate when there is pedestrian traffic.
14. It is not considered appropriate to wear hospital white overcoats home and to work if you are not a doctor even though you might work in a hospital or a laboratory.
15. When talking to someone who is not an Indian it is highly suggested that thought process is used to factor in consideration, empathy and the environment. When in Rome do what the Romans do.
16. All 15 points above do not apply to Indian construction workers who have significantly contributed to Singapore progress over many decades and have an excellent societal values. This applies to all other Indian FTs including those purportedly holding professional qualifications, their children and their dependents.
