A China national was punched in the head during what was suspected to be an argument over mobile phone prices at a People's Park Centre tech store.
According to a Shin Min Daily News report, the foreign worker was later sent to the hospital.
Eye witness Mr Xie, 63, told Shin Min that the incident happened at about 6.50pm on Sunday evening.
The businessman was passing by the People's Park Centre mobile phone store when he saw the incident and alerted the Chinese language daily.
It was understood from Mr Xie's account that the man involved in the incident was a 45-year-old China national. He was purchasing a mobile phone from the shop when the disagreement came about.
The man, who was unnamed, had apparently become unhappy about extra GST charges in the total bill that he was not informed of earlier.
This led to the China national throwing the phone and its box packaging at the female salesperson whom he was speaking with. The items flung by the angry customer had hit the saleslady.
Mr Xie told Shin Min that several male sales staff immediately emerged from the shop and the customer was punched in the scuffle.
"I saw the man fall down like he was knocked unconscious. He later stood up again, but security had managed to separate the two groups by that time."
"When the ambulance arrived, I saw that the man had fainted again."
The Shin Min report also said that the man was later taken to the hospital for treatment as his head was swollen.
When a Shin Min reporter arrived at the scene, the police were already taking statements from some other Chinese nationals who had witnessed the scene.
It was understood that these foreign workers were there when the incident happened, but did not step up to help their friend during the fight. (so much for Friends)
Shin Min also reported that the incident was recorded by a nearby CCTV camera. The police was expected to obtain the footage to assist their investigations.
Mr Xie also told Shin Min that fights were commonplace in the People's Park Centre area, and that the latest scuffle was not quite out of the ordinary.
According to the shop owner, the disagreement had come about not because of additional GST charges but because the customer had requested for freebies.
The male shop staff who had hit the China national also did it out of self defence.
The shop owner, who was unnamed, told Shin Min that the customer had purchased a $140 mobile phone from a female store staff, and had requested for freebies during the purchase. However, his request was turned down.
In a fit of anger, the China national then threw the phone and its packaging at the saleslady, hitting her with the items.
This prompted the male shop staff to rush out of the store and confront the customer, after which the scuffle ensued.
A male shop staff tried to defend himself during the confrontation and had hit the customer, the shop owner said. He also told Shin Min that the punch thrown was not a malicious attack.
The store owner also denied that the incident came about because the saleslady had neglected to explain the extra GST charges to the customer.
Salepersons have rights to work in a safe environment.
