With clueless opposition politicians like Prabu Ramachandran, it is hardly surprising that the majority of S'poreans are not proficient at handling different varieties of the language. After all, an estimated 50% of households are ill equipped to support the use of Standard English. Even though English is considered a global language, most S'poreans appear to have command of less than 35% of the words in the lexicon. How on earth does an educated person consider a degree in English Literature from NUS "worthless"?
