You need someone to sue Lee hsien loong for a by election to happen.

Otherwise he will act blur and dial diam.

Who here wants to be the hero?

hmm... who could the incumbent field? OYK? or someone else?

OYK resigned from NTUC to move to private sector, might be seen as opportunistic to come back from private sector to vie for the vacant seat.

Desmond Choo kind of have a moral obligation to follow through with his promise to people of Hougang. Even though he lost the BE, he wanted to continue to be of service tot he people there.

Maybe PAP drop another scholar from the army?

I doubt he will act blur and diam diam. Inaction for too long will be politically costly. My guess will be May / Jun 2013 for BE.

It's quite ridiculous to have Teo Ser Luck covering his duties for too long, after all he has his own constituency to cover, and he is a mayor. The portfolios may or may not be a lot of work, but it would had seem like punishing the people of East Punggol by assigning an MP who is spread so thinly to take care of them. This is also not in the best interest for the people there.

Probably a new face. I doubt it will be OYK. He is tainted by the SMRT affairs and this will be too soon for him.

In a 1-on-1 fight, WP has a real chance here. The combined oppo votes in GE2011 was slightly over 45%.
They need a 2.5% swing and against a newbie PAP candidate, and the backdrop of this scandal, not impossible.
The last time they fielded a newbie in a SMC BE was against JBJ in Anson, and they lost.

But we should not discount the possibility of a multi-corner fight. KJ already said he is contemplating.
Aung Juan Soon Chee may see this as a godsend opportunity since it came right on the heel of his discharged from bankruptcy.
And there is always the spoiler, DL.

In any case, this is exciting times......:biggrin::biggrin:

I was thinking, if PAP loses this BE, it will be the third parliamentary losses in a row.
Will they accelerate the little changes, if any, they made since GE2011?
Something for the Ponggol East residents to consider....

Possible candidates in BE:

PAP
OYK or a new face. Not much choices since this was too sudden. Moving Desmond Choo there may seem opportunistic.

WP
Lee Lilian. Unless WP chooses one of its NCMPs, but unlikely cos they will be left with the same no. of seats (which was why they chose Png for Hougang).

SJP
Desmond Lim has dropped hints. SJP because he seems to have given up using the SDA platform these days.

RP
Anounced that it wants to go for it and if it turns out, I am sure Kenneth Jeyaretnam will be the candidate since the whole party is under his dictatorial control.

Independent
Former SPP Ben Pwee said he wants to contest. Quite surprising that he is willing to stake his reputation as a spoiler after all the goodwill that he has gathered.

We will get a 5-way fight if all of them go in, but I think it will be PAP vs WP in the end.

Not likely to contest:

SPP
Has given clear support to WP.

SDP
Unlikely to announce that they will contest since they have been hardest-selling for opposition unity.

NSP
They will make a lot of hullaboo but will rule it out in the end cos they want to show that they are above WP where Tampines and MK are concerned.

Right now, TJS still maintaining silence.

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) has said a by-election must be held in Punggol East SMC to preserve Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's moral authority.

In a statement signed by SDP's Secretary-General Chee Soon Juan, the party said Mr Michael Palmer's stepping down as a Member of Parliament and also as Speaker of Parliament has left a gaping hole in the legislature that cannot be ignored or papered over.

More importantly, SDP said voters of Punggol East have been badly let down and they deserve the opportunity to elect another representative.

The statement said governance requires not just political but also moral authority.

It said without moral authority, the PM will find his power undermined and challenged from within and outside of his party.

A by-election is the only way that Mr Lee can stem the erosion of his moral authority, it added.

Too many political party in Singapore. The real ground was only PAP and WP. PAP had converted other small party (MIC, MCA, UMNO and so on) become a strong party.

The WP leader still sleep. They never try to alliance with other small party to make them strong. The WP had to make sometime different from PAP. The small parties shall had their own voice and activities but when come to election small parties shall provide good quality candidate to contest in election. The number of candidate from small parties shall come to an agreement point before contest. If not, WP party will facing more cornered fight in Election.

In the 2011 general elections, this ward was the only ward to have a 3 cornered fight, not seen since the 2001 general elections in the then Bukit Timah SMC. Desmond Lim of the Singapore Democratic Alliance secured a mere 4.45% of the votes in Punggol East SMC, against PAP's Michael Palmer and [[Singapore Democratic Alliance's Desmond Lim, which is the lowest percentage of votes a candidate has gotten in the 2011 election. As a result, he was the only candidate in that particular election to have his election deposit forfeited.

SINGAPORE: The National Solidarity Party (NSP) has said it appreciates the open and responsible way that the PAP has handled the discovery of the extra-marital affairs of former Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer.

In a media statement, NSP's Secretary-General Hazel Poa said "regardless of his or her position, each person should be responsible and accountable for his/her actions." And "this is a principle we must uphold."

Ms Poa said the NSP noted with concern the rise in the number of high-profile cases of marital infidelities, and "urged the MCYS to study if these are signs of a rising social problem, and if so, the underlying causes."

She said the impact of a social breakdown to a person's quality of life can never be compensated by economic achievements.

On the possibility of a by-election at Punggol East, Ms Poa said the NSP has decided not to create a multi-cornered fight by contesting, "in the interest of furthering the opposition cause".

The Workers' Party contested in the Punggol East single-member constituency (SMC) at the last election and has indicated its desire to do so again in the event of a by-election.
