Virginity has NEVER been a criterion for becoming a priest of the Roman Catholic church.

Any man, married/divorced/non-virgin, is welcome to join the priesthood of the Roman Catholic Church. But once ordained a priest, he has to observe celibacy for as long as he remains in the priesthood. If he can't do that, he will have to tender his resignation to the Church. He will become a layman.

But priests who belong to the Eastern Orthodox tradition do NOT need to observe celibacy. They can continue to have sexual relations with their wives.

One must remember that ALL apostles of Jesus, including St Paul of Tarsus, with possibly the exception of St. John the Beloved, were married men when they carried on the work of their Master after His ascension to heaven. Their wives accompanied them on their missionary work.

The Ukrainian Catholic Church and Ukrainian Orthodox Catholic Church allow married priests, but for those priests who were single when they were ordained, they have to be celibate. And only unmarried (and celibate) priests can be appointed a Bishop and higher.
