SINGAPORE: A 21-year-old student has been sentenced to four weeks' jail for using criminal force on a police officer.
Rajieef Raguaan caused Sergeant Muhammad Helmi Jaafar's left shoulder to be dislocated when the officer tried to stop him from advancing.
The incident occurred at around 7am on Christmas Day last year.
21-year-old Sergeant Muhammad Helmi and a colleague, Corporal Muhd Syawallutdin, 23, were patrolling North Bridge Road, between Parliament House and Boat Quay when they heard a commotion.
The sergeant then noticed that there was a dispute between two groups of people on opposite sides of the road.
He was talking to the group nearer to him when the other party, consisting Rajieef and five others, proceeded to cross the street.
Sergeant Muhammad Helmi noted that Rajieef was behaving in an aggressive manner and decided to speak to him first to calm him down.
Rajieef and his group then walked away towards the middle of North Bridge Road.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Adrian Loo told District Judge See Kee Oon that Rajieef suddenly turned around and rushed towards the other group.
Upon seeing this, Sergeant Muhammad Helmi stepped forward, raised his arms and told him to stop advancing.
However, Rajieef ignored his orders and swung his arms towards the officer's direction.
In the process of doing so, Rajieef's right hand went under the officer's left arm and he jerked it upwards- resulting in the dislocation.
Sergeant Muhammad Helmi fell to the ground and he was soon sent to the Singapore General Hospital.
For using criminal force to deter a public servant from performing his duty, Rajieef could have been sentenced to a maximum of four years' jail and fined.
