Hi guys,

I'm sure you all have heard about the horror stories of maid abusing young children under their care or stealing or bring boyfriend home...etc

I've young children at home and will be expecting a new maid soon.
Hope to install CCTV to monitor maid.

Hope to draw your opinions whether to make known to maid CCTVs or have concealed ones?

1) Make known.
It will serve as a deterrant but there will always be blind spots.

2) Concealed.
If maid behaves, nothing happens.
But once catch her red handed, can send her back the very next day.
Concern is, her reaction if she finds out about the concealed camera subsequently.

Which option would you take and why?

Your comments are much apprecaited!:D

Just tell her there is 24-hr surveillance around the house except inside the toilets and her own room. Make sure you have cameras monitoring the entrances to the toilets and her room so that you will know if she is behaving suspiciously around these unmonitored areas. You don't have to tell her the locations of the cameras.

Informing her is only ethical. You would want your employer to let you know you are being monitored too, wouldn't you? Even if you don't plan to set up cameras initially, you can still tell her that there is constant surveillance so that you can secretly put in the cameras later if you strongly suspect something fishy going on. This has always been my approach.

lianbeng says, "put up the notice - this place is under cctv surveillance! but make sure u urself dun walk about naked at home ok?" :D

If she knows how to block or switch off then how?

It's a funny world. You monitor your family and your boss monitors you.

If it is blocked or switched off, you would know right? You can always take countermeasures if this happens.

Place 1 in the bathroom, she may be doing some funny business in there...

That is understandable as she has more brains than you (should be you are stupid and not that she is clever).

Put a mix of concealed, actual as well as dummy ones in the open areas and entrances of the house. Tell her upfront and inform her that its for security purposes.

Put in UPS system for the DVR and have a mixed system, one via cable and the other via wireless. Have each system on overlap/overwatch so that they cover each other.

Another way is to have your system send quick snapshots via email to you every time there is movement(set sensitivity to low so that you don't end up with lots of emails)

I still remembered putting in dog barking sounds, people talking and kids running around in my camera system to automatically activate when motion is sensed near the door. The files also repeat and to randomise after that so that the same file is never played back twice within a set amount of time. When a neighbour next door got my mail by mistake, they pressed the doorbell for ages as they heard a lot of activity every time they walk by. It was only when i went back that they complained about my "family" inside not opening the door that i smile, apologised and turned down the volume of the "activities"

Having UPS will ensure you can still capture for a certain period of time even if power is out, having a couple of IR enabled cameras would ensure you can still record even in complete absence of lights. There is no foolproof way but having redundant systems with overwatch followed by UPS and IR features would be safer. A friend of mine who i once gave a system to told me he recorded his mum speaking the maids name whenever she walks towards the backgate. It frightened her so much that she stopped going there to speak with the nice bangladesh gentleman.

UPS? Didn't come across any DVR setup that has UPS. Are they for residential or commercial purposes?

Seems so far, most bro are for telling maid, just not location...

Anybody for non-disclosure?

How young are your kid(s). Able to talk? If not, then either you trust your maid or have someone else take care of them when you and spouse are at work. You can hand over the abusive maid to the cops, or send them back, but the damage may be irreversible.

Cheers!

New born. Initial 1-2yrs hope to have my in-laws taking care.
Not sure what to expect, installing CCTV as insurance.

Hidden meaning that you dont trust the maid. If she find out that will cause her anger,
If want to install camera tell her honestly that you want to monitor house for security and children that all.
Respect her also mean she will respect you.

I have cousins who entrust child care almost entirely to their maids. Thank goodness nothing's happened so far. I suppose the gripeful maid is the exception, but that's still taking a chance. I didn't take that chance, my wife is a full time homemaker - she gave up her career in HR.

One needs bear in mind that parenthood is a commitment and during the early years (which can last till early primary school) sacrifice from both parents is necessary.

You and your other half will want to know everyting about your kids, their mannerism, their allergies, their strenghts and weaknesses, and you want them to know you in return. Look at it that way, and spend as much time as you both can. When your kids become teenagers, papa and mama only bring embarassment. And after that, they'll have their own families.

Cheers!

Given a choice, all of us hope to no need to work for income and spend time with children, but it is always a delicate balance.Guess there no right or wrong, depending on individual's priorities in life. :-)

In our case, we hope to have the best of both worlds, so trying to put in place system to make it happen.

So far, most bro seems to go for open cams.
