Prayers and smiles aren't going to food on the table.

Compassion and consideration are personal qualities that can be extended by anyone to those of their choosing. Those who believe in it should practise it in their daily lives instead of simply harping on the fact that others aren't exhibiting these traits.

hi there

What's wrong with the income gap widening?

In the Olympics, nobody cares about the time of the runner who came in last so why should we bother about the incomes of the lowest earners?

But in the SINgapore 'olympics', we are not asking for favoritism for it is held on 'home ground', but the Organizer of the race give unfair advantage to the foreign runners; though the local runners are better equipped. They were given free training, extra coaching, sponsored 'gears'; even if they donpt win the race, they benefited greatly from this & go on & compete in another 'place'.

The local runners, even they win, they are still disadvantaged, when they loose, they loose BIG! & there is no recovery, more like hanging from a tree..better off dead.

Are you suggesting that the lowest earners be better off dead, so that, they do not be burden to society & bring in more foreigners & kill off the bottom rung?
:p

Income gap is something you have to close yourself, No government or corporation is going to do that for you. We also have to understand that Singapore is a highly competitive country, so don't walk around with red eyes at the number of luxury cars and high end properties and start comparing.

If they can't survive, let them starve to death. It may sound cruel but it's the best long term solution.

ok,got you. you have the same ideology of Hail Hitler. useless ones should be terminated.
nothing wrong with it. everyone got different thinking and outlook.

but in a cuntry , the governmen should HELP the less fortunate.
that's the purpose of having a governmen and ppaying taxes.
goveernmen use taxes to build road , hospitals , school , etc.
taxesss are not meant to for personal safe deposit.
the key word here is to HELP , not spoon feed.

In life, we're all competing against each other too. It starts at the moment of conception where the most agile sperm reaches the egg first.

Competition continues through childhood at school via the education system.. then through tertiary studies.. then in the job market and then within the organisation you work for. Countries too are in constant competition for scarce resources and as a result, there will be winners and there will be losers. It's part and parcel of the survival of the fittest and the most agile.

Yours sperm scenario is the natural selection law which benefit human. Unless you think of yourself like a single cell sperm

Your examples of education and job highlighted the processes where an individuals eventually finds the best way he or she could contribute to the society as a whole. It does not mean some will be left to rot

Your other examples of business and country are not sustainable. Eventually each entity will need to find a way to coexist with one another.

You are mixing healthy competition with selfish motive. Repent soon

If you interfere with this process, the laws of nature cease to function.

Unless you are a thing, a plant or an animal, human has been messing with the law of nature for the longest time

Deal with it

Disagree

They can't survive because of their own "defects" or it's because of the selfish motive of a few?

I can bet my last cent, true pink Singaporeans and Singapore will survive better without those selfish few than those supposedly defected ones

Talk is cheap. There is nothing to stop any Singaporean from lending a hand to those they feel sorry for.

If you want to play your part in reducing the income gap, give a portion of your salary to someone you feel isn't earning what he should be.

I pay out more than $20,000 a month towards reducing the income gap.

Agree and disagree. Well disagree much more actually

We could only do so much on a personal capacity. Such national issue needs to involve the whole society

And the best place to start is to introduce healthy political competition that always, always benefits the consumers.

Then we will have different voices, some will sing the high GDP growth song, others the more compassionate tunes, etc, etc. Let the society decides on its direction and pace, instead of giving unconditional and uncontrolled power to the selfish few

"Society" is nothing more than a sum of individuals and the capacity of any society is the collective total of all individual efforts within that society.

If Singaporean society is caring and compassionate, then the disadvantaged will be well taken care of. If they're all selfish, then they won't.

Disagree. If all true pink Singaporeans are equal to the last atom, molecule, etc, etc, sure you have a point.

No government or corporation is going to do that for you.

Disagree.

The White Scums can stubbornly refuse because the daft 60% continue to give convincingly strong mandate to the them for more of the same screwing

Since we all should know by now who caused such unsustainable high income gap for what reason, I can fully understand why they and you are saying it is the way it is and everyone should just accept it

I totally agree.

That's why I have been telling anyone who bothers, to screw the daft 60%. For they indirectly tell the White Scums that things are ok, high income gap is ok, being selfish is ok.

Prof Lim Chong Yah: Compulsory min wage scheme may be necessary

He attributed the opening of floodgates to foreign labour, to Singapore’s fear of being uncompetitive. The result was that the non-resident labour force increased from 300,800 in 1991 to 1.2 million last year, out of which only 1.7 per cent earned wages high enough to pay income tax.

Even income gap is imported.

I dunno what to say

what you described is correct. but it mainly applied to the animal world.

the GREAT difference here is we are HUMAN.

useless and needless to elaborate more to anyone with traits of an animal.
it is ok if you choose to live like an animal. that's your life.

this doggie is better than you , an animal in human form. what a shame to the human race.

A True Story: http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/jasmine.asp

In 2003, police in Warwickshire , England , opened a garden shed and found a whimpering, cowering dog. The dog had been locked in the shed and abandoned. It was dirty and malnourished, and had quite clearly been abused.

In an act of kindness, the police took the dog, which was a female greyhound, to the Nuneaton Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, which is run by a man named Geoff Grewcock, and known as a haven for animals abandoned, orphaned, or otherwise in need.

Geoff and the other sanctuary staff went to work with two aims: to restore the dog to full health, and to win her trust. It took several weeks, but eventually both goals were achieved. They named her Jasmine, and they started to think about finding her an adoptive home.

Jasmine, however, had other ideas. No one quite remembers how it came about, but Jasmine started welcoming all animal arrivals at the sanctuary. It would not matter if it were a puppy, a fox cub, a rabbit or, any other lost or hurting animal. Jasmine would just peer into the box or cage and, when and where possible, deliver a welcoming lick.

Geoff relates one of the early incidents. "We had two puppies that had been abandoned by a nearby railway line. One was a Lakeland Terrier cross and another was a Jack Russell Doberman cross. They were tiny when they arrived at the centre, and Jasmine approached them and grabbed one by the scruff of the neck in her mouth and put him on the settee. Then she fetched the other one and sat down with them, cuddling them."

"But she is like that with all of our animals, even the rabbits. She takes all the stress out of them, and it helps them to not only feel close to her, but to settle into their new surroundings. She has done the same with the fox and badger cubs, she licks the rabbits and guinea pigs, and even lets the birds perch on the bridge of her nose."

Jasmine, the timid, abused, deserted waif, became the animal sanctuary's resident surrogate mother, a role for which she might have been born. The list of orphaned and abandoned youngsters she has cared for comprises five fox cubs, four badger cubs, fifteen chicks, eight guinea pigs, two stray puppies and fifteen rabbits - and one roe deer fawn. Tiny Bramble, eleven weeks old, was found semi-conscious in a field. Upon arrival at the sanctuary, Jasmine cuddled up to her to keep her warm, and then went into the full foster-mum role. Jasmine the greyhound showers Bramble the roe deer with affection, and makes sure nothing is matted.

"They are inseparable," says Geoff. "Bramble walks between her legs, and they keep kissing each other. They walk together round the sanctuary. It's a real treat to see them."

Incestuous relationship and self gratification

The natives of Sin should stand up to applaud Prof Tommy Koh for his vocal support to the lonely voice of Prof Lim Chong Yah in his call for narrowing the income gap and inequality in our society. And thank the ST for publishing his view on this. One or two individuals, no matter how distinguished, could not make any ground against a pack of hyenas. There is an urgent need for the intellectuals with a conscience to stand together to make the voice heard.

In his article in the ST today, Tommy Koh was hitting hard by quoting British PM David Cameroon’s comment about incestuous relationship in high places, ‘I scratch your back, you scratch mine’ in the UK. Among the pseudo elite who are there to protect each other’s interest and pocket, there is a race to pay one another as much as they could. This kind of self gratification or in colloquial terminology, ‘pah chiu cheng’ is getting so serious and prevalent that it has become a norm. The elite thought nothing of it, that it is their right of passage to richness and instant gratification.

The pseudo elite are not blind or stupid. They knew exactly what they were doing, selective objectivity. Tommy Koh quoted the choice of using the flawed American model to pay themselves crazy instead of the more conservative Japanese model when the loot is much smaller. It is so glaring that the American model is running down the American and the world economy, but the pseudo elite are turning a blind eye to the dire consequences awaiting. They refuse to acknowledge or discuss the flaws of the system as long as they can continue to ‘pah chiu cheng’ and have a good time at the expense of the other extreme end of the social economic spectrum.

Tommy ended his article by saying, ‘In conclusion, I wish to thank Prof Lim for being our moral conscience. He has reminded us that our mission is to achieve growth with equity. Our mission is to build a fair and prosperous Singapore. What we have achieved so far is a prosperous but unfair society. Prof Lim has warned us that we have deviated from our original path and that we are dangerously close to a point when our inequality could adversely affect our cohesion and harmony.’

Thank you Tommy. To those elite with a conscience, Tommy added, ‘those at the top, should, however, reflect deeply on Prof Lim’s proposal and on their responsibility to society.’

Unfortunately many are busily trapped in the act of ‘pah chiu cheng’ and have no time to reflect and simply shoot off their hips at the proposal of Lim Chong Yah, without taking their attention off their act of self gratification for a moment. Just wait for the hyenas screaming in chorus to attack Tommy this time.

Income Replacement Rate Revisited
According to above table, after working 30 long years, the male guy earning $1,820 can expect a future income of only $2,340. Even if the poor bloke had a guaranteed salary increment of 1 percent each year, he should be looking forward to earning $2,428 or more. Do the math. Discounted backwards, that kind of pay is not enough to cover the ravage of annual inflation at 2 percent. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) core inflation measure, which excludes costs for accommodation and private road transport, was moderated to 2.7 per cent in the April-to-June quarter. Official figures showed Singapore's Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate rose to 5.3 per cent year-on-year in June 2012 from 5.0 per cent of the previous month.

So why did the professors use the number $2,340? Probably because it best fits Tharman's projected Income Replacement Rate (IRR) figure of $1,330 at age 65. Think of the tabulation as answers hashed to fit the question. However you look at it, the future is pretty bleak.

Professors Chia Ngee Choon and Albert Tsui of the National University of Singapore crafted their 27-page study using ministry wage data growth for the past 10 years, highly secretive numbers previously unavailable to the public or researchers. Which makes it difficult for anybody else on planet earth to challenge their computation. They argue that a 25-year old male who starts work at a median monthly pay of $2,500 will be able to build up sufficient CPF savings over 40 years, and retire at 65 with 70 percent of his pre-retirement income pegged at age 55. It would appear the objective of the exercise is to debunk the report by Professor Hui Weng Tat of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, which had warned that young Singaporean graduates may not have enough CPF savings for retirement.

Prof Hui may not have access to the top secret data conveniently made available to the NUS dons, but the numbers may not withstand close scrutiny. Note that the starting pay for the 70th percentile (upper middle income, male) is indicated as $3,300. That means the $15,000 compensation for members of parliament, who also draws pay from their day job, must be categorised as supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. And the descriptive for the minister's pay check will surely be beyond this universe.

The NUS study also claims that the "Workfare safety net" provides a significant boost for the low-wage workers, rocketing their IRR from 80 percent to 92 percent. At those rates, even pigs will fly.
