SINGAPORE: Police said they take a serious view on the setting off of improvised devices constructed using sparklers.

They said such improvised explosive devices are a potential fire hazard, and may cause noise pollution and undue alarm to members of the public.

The blast effect from the explosion can also cause injury to persons and damage property.

They issued the reminder after receiving several reports this month where sparklers are believed to have been used to set off such devices.

While the import and sale of some types of sparklers are legal in Singapore, Police said they should be used in a responsible manner according to the safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer.

Anyone caught setting off improvised explosive devices may be prosecuted in court.

If convicted they can be jailed for up to a year and fined up to S$5,000.
