Rohtak rape case: Accused in police custody

ROHTAK: A local court on Thursday sent the two Haryana policemen, accused of raping a woman from Rohtak who subsequently committed suicide, to three days police custody. ( Watch )

Chief Judicial Magistrate Bhupendra Nath sent constables Balrarj Singh and Silak Ram to police custody till June 14.

The two policemen, who had been absconding since Monday when the woman committed suicide protesting police inaction to arrest the duo, surrendered before Rohtak police late on Wednesday evening, after which they were arrested.

The two accused had been slapped with the charge of rape by public servants on duty under section 376 B of Indian Penal Code, police sources said.

The duo was brought to Rohtak police station by their relatives who are also policemen, they said.

Singh and Ram had allegedly raped the woman in Rohtak on April 10. The woman committed suicide at the state police headquarters in Panchkula on June 9 expressing her frustration that no action has been taken against the accused.

The FIR in the rape case was registered 50 days after the rape incident and that too after the victim and her husband Subhash ran from pillar to post approaching senior officers pleading that action be taken against the guilty who had been roaming free.

Father: A boar to compensate girl's rape

HSINCHU, Taiwan -- A drunkard father in a Hsinchu village has failed to get a wild boar as compensat

ion, which he demanded after the rape of his fifth-grade daughter.

Police in the village in Hsinchu county arrested a 60-year-old hobo Tuesday on charges of raping a minor, whose identity was withheld.

Investigators identified the hobo only as Lin, who had sex with the fifth grader three times, promising to pay her NT$1,500.

Only NT$500 was paid, investigators said.

Dissatisfied, the girl told her father of the sexual molestation early last week.

The father, not identified, had Lin beaten up and demanded that a wild boar be given as compensation. It's customary among an indigenous people in Taiwan to demand a boar or water buffalo to settle a serious dispute.

Lin couldn't pay hunters to kill the wild animal, however.

His daughter, on the other hand, told her schoolmaster of Lin's continued molestation. The schoolmaster reported the case to police as well as Hsinchu social workers.

Social workers took the fifth grader under their custody.

"Then," a police sergeant said yesterday, "the father filed complaints with us against the schoolmaster." "He said he would sue the schoolmaster for breaking up his family," the sergeant added.

The schoolmaster said he was sorry to have the girl taken under social workers' custody. "But," he added, "that's the only right thing I could do."
