SINGAPORE: Traffic police arrested 23 offenders in a five-hour anti-drink driving operation on Saturday morning.

This brings the number of drink drivers caught so far this year to 2,650.

Of these, 20 per cent were involved in accidents.

For this latest operation, police set up simultaneous road blocks along Zion Road, Havelock Road, Outram Road and Ganges Avenue.

Traffic police said compared with last year, there has been a seven per cent increase in arrests of drink drivers who were involved in accidents.

On conviction, drink drivers will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months and have their licenses revoked.

First-time offenders can be fined between S$1000 and S$5000, or jailed up to six months.

Repeat offenders face a maximum fine of S$30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.
