Recovering jewellery swallowed by an alleged thief should be messy but relatively easy.

But police have admitted one of two rings eaten by a man after a break-in at a jewellers last Friday has been "inadvertently disposed of" after he went to the toilet in custody.

Something has definitely hit the fan and Queensland Police says it's notified the Ethical Standards Command.

"One ring has been passed by the man and has been inadvertently disposed of. To date efforts to locate the ring have been unsuccessful," a police spokesman said.

"Medical advice confirms the presence of the second ring inside the man, who is still in police custody."

No further explanation of how the ring was lost was given by police.

The robbery took place in Indooroopilly in Brisbane's south west.
