Police bust electronic counterfeit syndicates

SINGAPORE - Officers from the Intellectual Property Rights Branch (IPRB) in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) busted two counterfeit syndicates and arrested five people for suspected involvement in the sales and distribution of counterfeit mobile phones and tablet accessories.
In a 12-hour operation which ended on August 1, four men and one woman, aged between 32 and 48 years, were arrested.
Simultaneous raids were carried out at two shopping malls located along Rochor Canal Road and Orchard Road, as well as a unit in Kallang.
More than 5,500 pieces of trademark-infringing goods, with an estimated street value of $112,180, were seized.
Investigations against all five subjects are on-going.
Any person found guilty of selling or distributing infringing articles with falsely applied trademark may be fined up to $10,000 per article with a maximum total fine of $100,000, or an imprisonment term of up to five years, or both.
