SINGAPORE : Police have arrested a woman suspected of preying on the elderly with her sob stories.
The 37-year-old woman is believed to have conned her victims into parting with their money - with a story that she has just had a miscarriage or was experiencing difficulties with her pregnancy.
The suspect would ask them to lend her money. She would then give them a fictitious name and contact number on the pretext of re-paying them.
Her alleged ruse was exposed when a civilian analyst attached to the Intelligence Branch of the Bedok Police Division, Chris Oh, spotted her in the area of Block 85, Bedok North Road at about 8pm on Wednesday.
He recalled having seen her face on CCTV footage when he was working on other related cases.
The officer kept watch on her movements while he called for reinforcements. The suspect was detained along Bedok North Road.
She will be charged in court on Friday with cheating. If convicted, she faces a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.
