A night market was raided by police and officers from the National Environment Agency (NEA) two nights ago.

Popularly known as 'pasar malam', a temporary night market opposite Choa Chu Kang MRT was raided at about 7pm on 15 March.

NEA officers had visited the market and found a food stall that consisted of five local and seven illegal workers from Indonesia.

The officers informed the police and the Ministry of Manpower, and the police quickly arrived to arrest the workers.

Despite the arrests, the stall owner claimed that he was not aware the helpers were illegal workers.

On top of that, the stall owner even went on to lament that
it is difficult to hire locals as Singaporeans tend to shun harsher working conditions, so stall owners have little choice but to hire foreigners.
