"A breakdown in train services is in itself no big deal. That happens all over the world. However, foreign investors are looking with great interest at how the government is dealing with an electorate that seems to demand more accountability," said Hans Vriens, the managing partner of a Singapore-based corporate advisory firm.

The incident also puts into spotlight on whether some of Singapore state companies are behind the times.

"SMRT with its twitter service from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. clearly doesn't cut it," added Vriens, referring to the company's failure to use new media to disseminate information. He was on a train that broke down on Saturday morning.

Other commentators voiced concerns about Singapore's ability to cope with civil emergencies, given the inadequate response by SMRT to the breakdowns when they first occurred.

"Imagine if the service disruption was caused by a terrorist attack and the panic, confusion, and fear multiplied many times," said Eugene Tan, an assistant professor of law at Singapore Management University.

He said part of the problem was due to SMRT staff not being given the authority to make decisions on the spot.

I would suggest that Reuters has no business commenting on the internal affairs of Singapore. It is none of their business how we handle issues which are of no concern to a foreign news organisation.

The Singapore govt is answerable to it's own people and it will do so in due course.

You are the product of 40 years of oppressive rule, growing up only believing the shitty times - the mouthpiece of the ruling party. What's wrong with foreign press? They can report and you are free to exercise your right to embrace its views. Press freedom is something we must all open our minds to.

It clearly shows that Reuters isn't happy with Singapore at all.. I wonder why?

The PAP is screwing up Singapore and making investors run away with so many displays of incompetence, inefficiency, insensitivity and complacency.

Our great leader has always scolded us for wanting an Opposition in govt as it would mean chaos and ruin. But looks like now, our Great Leader should scold his son and his wife foe once.

It is not the govt's job to please Reuters so who cares how they feel.

The government is there to serve the people and in this regard, it has done a fantastic job. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the PAP for transforming Singapore from swampland to a world beating nation in such a short period of time.

if the government cannot convince international news organizations of how good they are, then international investors will only get to read negative news stories. you hate to admit it, but the PAP needs to please the people as much as it needs to maintain a positive international image.

and this is a good thing for the people of singapore.

Reuters is merely saying it as it is.

They're making mountains out of molehills because they have an axe to grind. That's what jealousy does.

But Leongsam, you seem to have mood swings. In 1 of your earlier posts (in another thread), you seem to hate the PAP so much:

I hate the PAP to the very core. Their methods ruined the lives of many of my close friends and relatives. If I have a chance to spit on the graves of any of the members of that evil organisation, I'd do it without hesitation..............

u know how they do it? By funneling the liquid in the swampland to all our brains...thus cannot think, can decide. Now we need to drain the little "swamps" in our heads.

one cannot choose to bask in glory of the international media & when things are not going well, chaff them for reporting otherwise.

we are not some communist propaganda shit...what reuters say is true and I join them in mocking SMRT and their management.

SMRT joins the rank of DBS, Tiger and the telcos for being stuck in the m&d & ill-prepared as they have dollar signs all watermarked in their mission statement.

I hate many individuals who make up the PAP but as political organisation, it has done wonders for the country.

I hate many individuals who make up the PAP but as political organisation, it has done wonders for the country.

Today's PAP political organization is no longer the one in the 70's and early 80's. It is obsessed with greed, power and dictatorship. It's true that only a very selected few can still be counted upon today, but as individual, they have no power at all, lest to go against their masters.

Singapore is a cosmopolitan city state, as a entrepot for worldwide interest group, it is answerable to all interested parties, there's no such thing as private issue for a worldwide celebrity, everything said & done is open for scrutinising under the microscope! The Singapore govt will never answer to it's own citizen because they have deemed it unneccessary from the first day LKY took control of the country! Arrogant bastard do not answer to daft & unmotivated peasants!

Nobody was more obsessed with power than LKY. He was so obsessed that he went as far as to lock up his opponents, without trial, for 3 decades!!!

The current generation are a bunch of pussies in comparison.
