[h=1]PM'S FACEBOOK - BUSES DON'T MAKE MONEY: $600M TRANSPORT PROFITS?[/h]

SBS bus operations not making money
According to the Straits Times news report “PM tackles a range of personal questions, and some political ones, in Facebook chat” (Jan 24) – “”It is not true that SBS Transit earns huge profits. In fact in recent years their bus operations have not been making money,” he said. “The government subsidises public transport heavily – we are spending billions every year building MRT lines, and also spending almost a billion on the BSEP (bus services enhancement programme). But commuters too have to pay a fair share.”
SBS does make money?
According to SBS Transit’s web site – it’s 9 months’ profits for Fy2014 was $14 million – a 47 per cent increase over the same period the previous year.
With the huge drop in oil prices – it’s anybody’s guess what their full- year profits will be.
SMRT’s profits for the first half of FY2015 was $62.6 million – an increase of 48.3 per cent over the same period the previous year.
$200m profits?

Similarly, with the fall in oil prices, the combined profits of SMRT and SBS Transit for the full year is expected to be about $200 million.
$600m profits?
Public transport should be considered in its entirety – including taxis. If we include ComfortDelgro’s profits of $327 million in FY2013 – the entire public transport sector is expected to have a full-year combined profits of about $600 million.
So, where is the justification to increase fares once again?
Most countries also do not fund transport infrastructure from fares, but rather from the general state revenue.
In this regard, even after transport infrastructure spending – Singapore had a Budget surplus of $36.1 billion in FY2012 using IMF fiscal reporting guidelines.

This is 3Q2014 segment results analysis (page 9 of 12) from SBS:

"Revenue from the Bus segment of $197.6m for 3Q14 was higher by 11.8% or $20.8m than the $176.8m for the corresponding quarter last year due to the increases in average daily ridership and average fare, higher advertising sales, higher rental from renewals and higher other operating income. Average daily ridership increased by 3.1% to 2.8m passenger trips for 3Q14. Operating profit of $5.5m for 3Q14 increased by 4.0% or $0.2m from $5.3m for 3Q13 due mainly to higher revenue, offset by higher staff costs, higher depreciation, higher fuel and electricity costs and higher other operating expenses.

Revenue from the Rail segment of $51.0m for 3Q14 was higher by 21.3% or $8.9m than the $42.1m for the corresponding quarter last year due to the commencement of Downtown Line (DTL)1 operations, increases in average daily ridership and average fare, higher advertising sales and higher rental from new shops. For 3Q14, average daily ridership for the North-East Line (NEL) grew by 7.1% to 527k passenger trips and that for the Light Rail Transit (LRT) went up by 9.5% to 89k passenger trips as compared to 3Q13. Average daily ridership for DTL1 was 68k passenger trips. Operating profit of $2.3m for 3Q14 increased by $2.25m as compared to the $0.05m for 3Q13 due mainly to higher revenue, offset by higher staff costs and DTL1 losses. "

Dear Real Singapore,

I have compiled key financial numbers from SMRT and SBST annual reports since 2000.

Key highlights:

SMRT

In every FY from 2000 to 2014, SMRT earned an operating profit in the range of $84.2 - $197.2 million. There was never a year in which SMRT made a loss.

From FY2001 to FY2014, SMRT paid out a total dividend sum of $1.6 billion! Now you know where the money for the 1,000 buses comes from (http://www.lta.gov.sg/apps/news/page.aspx?c=2&id=d404f5a4-a57d-45b1-b7cb-bd019638b10a).

In recent years, SMRT's return on equity plummeted from above 20% to 7.9%. Hence, the fare hikes to reward 'loyal shareholders' (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0dFf0ojY-LPbDhsMVpkYllkVDg/view?usp=sharing). (How about 'loyal' commuters, or do we even have a choice when it comes to public transport?)
In FY2001, SMRT paid special dividends of $540 million to their majority shareholder, Temasek Holdings. Wonder if SMRT can do the same for SG50?

SBS Transit

In every FY from 2000 to 2013, SBST earned an operating profit in the range of $15.5 - $70.7 million. There was never a year in which SBST made a loss.

From FY2003 to FY2013, SBST paid out a total dividend sum of $362 million.

In recent years, SBST's return on equity plummeted from above 20% to 3.3%.

The Government has majority shareholdings in SMRT and SBS Transit via Temasek Holdings and ComfortDelgro. They are the greatest beneficieries of the dividend payouts.

I collated the data in a Google spreadsheet which shows the companies' operating profit, dividends paid and return on equity over the years:

The annual reports can also be downloaded from a public Google Drive folder, for verification purposes. The older reports predating 2010 are no longer available from the company websites.

I hope Real Singapore can publish an article to get the message out. Fare hikes are unacceptable!
