SINGAPORE : Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has congratulated the new leader of the Vietnamese Communist Party, Nguyen Phu Trong, on his appointment.
Mr Trong was appointed General Secretary at the party's 11th Congress that ended on January 19.
The party chief is also head of the law-making National Assembly in Vietnam.
Mr Lee said the adoption of the new five-year Socio-Economic Development Plan and the 10-year Socio-Economic Development Strategy at the Party Congress has set the direction for the next stage of Vietnam's development.
The Singapore leader expressed confidence that under Mr Trong's capable leadership, Vietnam will continue to advance rapidly and develop to its full potential.
Mr Lee's congratulatory note included an invitation for Mr Trong and his wife to visit Singapore.
He also congratulated outgoing party leader Mr Nong Duc Manh on the completion of his two terms as party chief.
Mr Lee said under Mr Manh's leadership, bilateral relations have continued to broaden and deepen.
He said he also looks forward to working with Mr Manh to further strengthen the close ties of friendship and cooperation between Singapore and Vietnam.
