SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said he will "carefully consider whether to call a by-election in Punggol East and, if so, when", following the resignation of Mr Michael Palmer, who was Member of Parliament for Punggol East SMC.

"The Constitution does not require me to call a by-election within any fixed timeframe," said Mr Lee in a statement. "I assure Singaporeans that I will make my decision based on what is best for the constituents of Punggol East and the country."

Mr Lee noted that the Government is currently focued on "several national issues". "Our Singapore Conversation is making good progress. The White Paper on Population is being finalised, and will be debated in Parliament in January. We are also preparing for Budget 2013," he said.

Mr Palmer resigned as Speaker of Parliament and as a member of the People's Action Party after admitting today to a relationship with a member of the People's Association staff.

Mr Lee said that his first priotity is to "ensure that the residents of Punggol East continue to be well taken care of".

"We have appointed Mr Teo Ser Luck to oversee Punggol East constituency, and Mr Zainal Sapari to chair the Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council. DPM Teo Chee Hean, who himself is in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, will also take a personal interest in the welfare of Punggol East residents," said Mr Lee.

Can Ass Loong tell us what are the "several national issues"? How to fix opposition? How to increase ERP/GST/COE? How to increase ministar salaries? How to bring in more FTs?

Some hero should start to sue him again in order to expedite the matter.

Otherwise he will just act blur and dilly dally.

This kind of undecided individual can lead a country of 6 million?

While at the same time get millions every year?

Discounted some more?? :D

The only positive is Pinky being around to say something. He is usually missing when bombs explode.

I think the PM has to make a strategic decision whether to do it even because with the ground so totally bitter, with all their high falulating moralistic rhetoric served on the WP in the Yaw saga, Sengkang East is probably as good as gone.

Now to just tell KJ to step aside and not interfere with his Reform party and let it be a straight PAP vs WP langgar

I believe PM will call for a BE, it's only a matter of timing. He will need to line up resources, mull over a suitable candidate, and find a suitable time - likely during the May / June period.

When it comes to considering the best interest of the electorate, let's not forget Punggol East has about 30K voters, that's slightly more than Hougang. It's not fair for them to be served by an MP/Mayor who has other things on his plate.

So baring unforeseen crisis which demand focus of the Govt, I'll say May / Jun 2013 there will be a BE.

Re: PM Lee to 'carefully consider' whether to call a by-election - 50 shades of deja

The BE should be called within a month. After XMas/New Year but before CNY.

PAP candidate ready and secured. They are fishing around for a third party to spoil the vote. So far no luck yet. Need to sweeten the offers considerably.

The split vote is however a back up plan. Plan A is to do it quickly so that this does not fester. They are quite confident of beating the previous WP candidate but are not so sure if WP pulls a heavyweight out of the hat.

yes indeed. cannot run away from by-election.......might as well confirm it but remain coy about timing.
talking like that makes him machaim coward chow ah gua afraid of a by-election (true also must act garang mah).
this type of standard for PM no wonder PAP got fractions.....all the more hasten PAP demise.

Strange things happen on the date 12.12.2012. Palmer's confession on the date Justice Pillai retires. Although I believe that this is purely coincidental, some other things may not be so easily explained away.
