If money was left in the hands of ordinary Singaporeans, all they would do would be to squander the money in one way or another as the majority do not have the financial acumen to be able to invest the funds wisely.

Singapore without LKY would have been a far far better Singapore.
Look at China who started of much later and from a much lower base than Singapore.
