Integrated resorts are a major boost to Singapore's economy: PM Lee

By S Ramesh | Posted: 01 May 2010 1638 hrs

Visitors walk towards the entrance of the Resorts World Sentosa casino on Singapore's Sentosa Island.

SINGAPORE: Singapore's two integrated resorts are a major boost to the country's economy, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Speaking in Mandarin at the May Day Rally, Mr Lee told his audience of some 1400 unionists, employers, ministers and MPs that he and his grassroots leaders visited Resorts World Sentosa a few days ago.

They visited the Universal Studios, a family attraction and met many families having a good time.

Mr Lee said he and his group also paid S$100 each to look around the casino.

But they did not lose any money because they did not gamble.

The Prime Minister said he is glad that visitors are generally happy with the IRs as such attractions make the economy more vibrant and the city more colourful.

He also noted that the conference facilities at Marina Bay Sands opened several days ago and the first major event, a lawyers' conference will be held tomorrow and will be attended by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.

He added that the IRs have created buzz and both were packed with visitors on their opening days, creating many jobs in the hospitality and tourism sector.

According to media reports, nearly 200 busloads of Malaysian tourists a day are visiting the IRs.

Mr Lee added that the Singapore economy has rebounded strongly for several reasons.

He said the country has responded decisively to tackle the challenges.

And secondly, Singapore's long term plans have taken effect, like the integrated resorts which were the result of decisions made 5 years ago.

He said they moderated the economic decline and created many job opportunities. - CNA/vm

I think $100 is less than a minute of his pay. Besides, he is on company time to go visit and jalan jalan. I am concerned about his staff... they don't want to go but lan lan must go because boss wants to go... so they pay out of pocket....

Wah, the M'sian government will be scratching their heads to counter this outflow of tourists and money. I think the people living in the southern half of Peninsular Malaysia - from Malacca to Pahang - will be heading south.

With the better Singapore currency rate, the payout at the casinos will be much better than Genting casino.

Ironically many Singaporeans are still put off by the $100 entry fee.

surprised that some of my colleagues who hardly gamble have visited RWS, locals and FTs included... the IRs have created many first-time gamblers...

Donch worry, the $100 will not even appear in his bank account statement as the decimal point is not at the hundredth digit point.

He also said he and the grassroot leaders did not lose any money. That meant they can claim back their $100 each they paid as entrance fee.

Guess who is footing their bills for their sightseeing trip then?

took the words out of my mouth... exactly exactly.

Sands will defintiely do that - c'mon Chief Executive of the Land came to visit & you don't know how to show goodwill ..... cheebye, the casino in charge should be shot if he dared retain their $100 levy.

All the news report for peasants' consumption only.

Pinkie and the scums in white think that the Sinkie peasants are stupid.

Of course they "did not lose any money", because the $100 that was "paid" can be claimed back as a business expense. Also like what some have suggested, the Genting people will secretly return the money paid in cash or in kind as a goodwill gesture.
