'There won't be another MM'
MINISTER Mentor Lee Kuan Yew is 'unique' and there will only be one 'MM', said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
'You can give him any title you like, he is Mr Lee Kuan Yew, he is unique.'
PM Lee was answering a question posed by Mr Yernar Zharkeshov, 25, a Kazakhstan student of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, at the NUS ministerial forum held last night.
The student wanted to know how the position contributed to the stability of Singapore, and if PM Lee might take on the title himself in the future.
On MM Lee's contribution, PM Lee said: 'In terms of his stature, in terms of his network, in terms of the weight which people give to what he says, I think he is a very precious resource.'
The Prime Minister then pointed to MM Lee's recent trip to Taiwan and Shenzhen as an example.
In Taipei, he met President Ma Ying- jeou, Vice-President Vincent Siew, Kuomintang honorary chairman Lien Chan and his wife, and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leaders Su Tseng-chang and Tsai Ing-wen.
In Shenzhen, he met Shenzhen Party Secretary Wang Rong.
Commenting on those visits, PM Lee said: 'Everybody met him, not for old times' sake, but because they value his ideas.
'They wanted to bounce ideas off him, and because they have high respect for him, they have high respect for Singapore.'
The Prime Minister added that this respect was shared by other political leaders in various parts of the world.
He said: 'I think that is something valuable we should keep, for as long as MM is able to contribute.'
As to whether the Prime Minister would become another 'MM', PM Lee said no. 'There will not be another MM, and I will not be an MM.'
