IN-BETWEEN discussing the economy and the impact of the Internet on politics worldwide, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong also had some words of advice for singles seeking a partner.

• Make time to go out and meet new friends.

• Join a dating agency, be it the government SDU/SDS or a private agency.

• Bring your social graces up to scratch. For instance, do not wear slippers when bringing your date for a romantic dinner at a nice restaurant.

• Have realistic expectations. You have to make an effort for the relationship to work.

A MATCHMAKING trend in Beijing has caught the Prime Minister's eye, and he floated the idea last night for Singapore to think about.

Mr Lee Hsien Loong described the phenomenon of Beijing parents secretly seeking spouses for their children at 'Parental Matchmaking Sessions' in parks.

Thousands of parents exchange the photos, resumes and phone numbers of their children, he said in his Mandarin speech at the National Day Rally.

The parents would then pass these phone numbers to their children, saying they came from colleagues, he added.

Perhaps Singapore parents too can play matchmaker for their children, doing it sensitively and with a helping hand from the People's Association (PA), he suggested.

Why those days we only need to hold only one job? We only work 9-5 daily. We get confirmed 13th mth AWS. Banks and financial institution gave at least 3 mths year-end bonuses. Salary increment for standard office workers usually $50 and above. We had lots of time to go car rides and lots of time to date. We do it practically everyday after work..

These days, we took on 2-3 jobs. Yet still have to stay back to finish our work. We don't reach home until almost close to midnite. Many companies these days don't give 13th mth AWS. Minimum 3 mths year-end bonus is no guarantee now. You're lucky to get one mth bonus. Pay increment comes in figures smaller than 30.. that is if you're lucky to get increment. And these days, any free time you have, you don't date. You use them to join the queque to pay your bills, insurance, road tax, whatever..
