WHy does defamation suit need to go jail?

there is such thing as criminal defamation for which one could be jailed

but in such a case the plaintiff is usually the state

but since LHL, tthe PM is seeking damages including aggravated damages, an injunction to restrain Mr Xu from publishing or disseminating the allegations, and costs.

this case is purely civil
