Man broke woman's nose after she repeatedly rejected his marriage proposal

SINGAPORE — After his girlfriend repeatedly refused to marry him, a man punched her on the nose, fracturing her nasal bone.
Muhammad Sufi Salim, 28, was jailed for eight months on Tuesday (2 February) after he pleaded guilty to one count of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to his 25-year-old then-girlfriend.
Another charge involving an earlier incident where Sufi hit his girlfriend on the left side of her body multiple times was taken into consideration for sentencing.
Sufi, a warehouse assistant, got to know the woman, a waitress, sometime in 2018 and they began dating soon after. However, the relationship was tumultuous, with the couple often arguing and Sufi at times resorting to violence, according to the prosecution.
Sufi was being investigated for the incident of violence against his girlfriend in February 2019.
On 30 April 2019, the couple argued over the idea of marriage at Labrador Park. Sufi kept asking the woman to marry him but she refused.
The dispute grew heated and both raised their voices. The woman began walking away from Sufi, who then grabbed onto her from behind.
During the ensuing struggle, both fell onto the ground. The woman tried to calm her boyfriend but he punched her on the nose, causing it to bleed.
The woman fled from the scene and sought help from a passerby who helped to call the police. She waited in the passerby’s car to keep away from Sufi, who had caught up to her.
Paramedics who arrived shortly at the scene conveyed her to hospital and Sufi was arrested by the police.
Another report from the hospital showed that the woman suffered from mild swelling and bruising over her nasal bridge and dried blood clots on both nostrils and bruises on her left shoulder, amongst other injuries. Another medical report later confirmed the woman had a nasal bone fracture
For voluntarily causing grievous hurt, Sufi could have been jailed up to 10 years, or fined, or caned.
