Fifteen years ago, a Canadian journalist of Chinese descent was assisting PBS in filming a documentary about worker protests in China. While interviewing a laid-off worker, he was suddenly attacked by several thugs who threw him into a van and drove to a secret location, where he was detained for 48 hours.

These thugs turned out to be secret police officers from the Chinese Communist Party. They told the journalist that he was engaging in illegal reporting and attempting to incite anti-China sentiment, which could result in a 20-year prison sentence. They then forced him into a car and drove him straight to the airport.

This journalist was Jiang Xueqin. After the incident, he returned to China and subsequently served as the director of the international department at Shenzhen Middle School, the director of the international department at Peking University High School, and the assistant principal of Tsinghua University High School.

Detained for 48 hours, stopped his investigative journalism gig, allowed to return to China to teach, then allowed to go back to Canada.
