Chinese not only spearhead Quantum Ghost image radars, Tera-Hertz radar, and the anti-stealth, phase array, synthetic aperture radars etc, they have got highest performance, reliable, capable qualities globally. This area stress in abilities to detect & track, ability to Jam, ability to sustain from Jamming, abilities to conduct deception / false target / hack / mislead and fool enemies.

WvPN-fypyuve0043238.jpg

ctaW-fypyuve0043261.jpg

lRKi-fypyuve0043293.jpg

Not at all, and this should be abundantly obvious from the article cited.

The South China Morning Post (not sure what their claim to fame is) describes the results of new physics experiment with entangled photons, claiming that this will have dire implications for radar technologies and speculating that a quantum radar would see American stealth airplanes.

The article is spotty on how exactly entangled photons help

A quantum radar, generating a large number of entangled photon pairs and shooting one twin into the air, would be capable of receiving critical information about a target, including its shape, location, speed, temperature and even the chemical composition of its paint, from returning photons.

Of course, all this information is provided by conventional non-entangled photons, which are easier to generate in large numbers and are not nearly as fragile as entangled pairs. The difference is that a quantum radar can, in theory, be more sensitive under ideal conditions, but only by a fairly modest amount AFAIK. Less-than-ideal conditions would undermine that promise.

The article also does not tell you that science experiments can be successful if they detect something once in a million experiments, whereas a weapon with such a track record isn’t very useful. Even a 1000-fold improvement would be pathetic.

The article contradicts itself by claiming that

The scientists said they were shocked because, until recently, the idea of quantum radar had remained largely confined to science fiction.

and then

America’s Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency has reportedly funded similar research and military suppliers such as Lockheed Martin are also developing quantum radar systems for combat purposes, according to media reports, but the progress of those military projects remains unknown.

I personally heard the idea of using entangled photons for remote sensing at a DARPA research review on quantum technologies around 2003 (where industry was present). So, the idea of quantum radar has been known for long time. Moreover, Los Alamos had successful experiments around that time that exchanged optical entangled photons between low-orbit satellites and ground stations under certain conditions. This is certainly not “confined to science fiction”. And if DARPA managed to get quantum radars working, the South China Morning Post would probably be the last to be informed about such progress, with all due and undue respect. Also, why would you trust a newspaper (in China or US) without a strong reputation and track record on matters related to physics? Especially if it makes claims like these

In theory, a quantum radar could detect a target’s composition, heading and speed even if managed to retrieve just one returning photon. It would be able to fish out the returning photon from the background noise because the link the photon shared with its twin would facilitate identification.

There isn’t enough information carried by one photon to get all those data. Even conventional single photons would have a low chance of getting back, and avoiding noise. Entangled photons sent at long distances would experience dramatic losses (far more than 99% of entangled pairs would be lost). For quantum cryptography applications, this was handled by quantum error correction. But for radar applications that try to detect a faint target, you’d need a radar hundred times more powerful than what is used now. So, if you want to see stealth planes better, just increase the power of your radar by, say, 10 times, and your radar will see a little better/farther.

What we learn from this article is that China’s journalists are catching up with US and European journalists who hail every new experiment with quantum information or computation as a game changer for something. There’s a short word for this - hype.

However, Ma, who was not involved with the CETC project, said serious technical challenges had long confined quantum radar technology to the laboratory.

But of course :)

Is China now the world leader in military radar technology research?

No. The University of Rochester did it back in 2012. Researchers use quantum properties to create jammer-proof radar.

Actually, the story is even more complicated. Lockheed Martin was granted a patent on Quantum Radar back in 2008.

Patent US7375802 - Radar systems and methods using entangled quantum particles

US defence contractor looks for quantum leap in radar research

… amd that’s the last people hear about it. If you think about it, how much is Lockheed Martin making on all those stealth aircraft? $34 billion on F-22, $1.5 Trillion for F-35. The $1.5 trillion plane that broke the Air Force With this kind of money, why in the world would Lockheed Martin spend a cent on making these aircraft potentially useless? Bored with too much money??? So it obviously is NOT going to do anything about it until it has to.

So the real story of the University of Rochester is more along the line of some academic lab trying to strike up a conversation with the DoD, like “Hey Lockheed Martin is doing sh*t, so how about if you give us a measley $5 million funding to do something?” So my guess is, DoD turned around to Lockheed Martin and said, hey buddy, you think there’s any leg in what those nerds are doing? And Lockheed Martin said, Nah, just a bunch of lab rats. We’ve looked into it way earlier, and it’ll never work in practice.

China, of course, didn’t invest trillions into the stealth products. Dropping a couple million into anti-stealth technology is positive to neutral for their business case. Whenever China makes a public announcement like this, it’s usually a precursor of some money-making scheme. The implied message is “hi guys, you can buy this from the US and they’ll charge you an arm and a leg, or you can buy the same sh*t from us and it’ll only cost you the price of half a keg of beer. So what do you say?” The same story line every time! Announce a new generation of jets, and the next thing you know, it’s showing up in all the trade shows, and cut the competitors price by 3/4, at least. Drones, missiles, tanks, … after the US tirelessly worked the world into an “everybody arms himself to the teeth” global environment since 9/11, the Chinese obviously feels obliged to make some money out of it. If you can’t fight the wave, you might as well ride it-sort of thing. The Dragon Muscles In: Growing Number Of Victories In Chinese Arms Exports

Sometimes you have to wonder what the WH is thinking - they are hot on the path to drive everyone to militarize, and China follows right behind with their irresistible cheap stuff. Is this a good cop-bad cop routine thingy or what?

China also have the DWL-002 passive radar detection system using multi-station layout, the base station will capture the signal, the signal to reach the station by calculating the time difference, you can calculate the radiation source and the distance difference between each station, and then find the coordinates of the target in the air.

DWL-002 Passive Detection Radar System Able to Detect Stealth Aircrafts

How Effective Is China's New Anti-Stealth Radar System, Really?

According to recent reports in the Chinese media, China is betting that its new DWL002 passive detection radar system will grant its armed forces a massive boost in countering the United States’ advanced stealth fighters. According to a report inDefense News, Chinese sources claim that the radar will render systems like the advanced F-22 fighter and the upcoming F-35 “obsolete” — a strong claim to be sure.

The DWL002 came to light in recent years and has been pitched by Chinese sources repeatedly as a credible counter to conventional stealth military aviation. The DWL002 is an emitter locating system (ELS) which partially iterates on innovations found in older Russian designs, including the KRTP Tamara series and ERA Vera-E. The DWL002 is a more advanced ELS compared to China’s YLC-20 system (which is itself based on the KRTP-91 Tamara). The United States and other Western European countries have abandoned the use and development of passive-detection radar systems, citing poor accuracy. China and Russia continue to use the systems. The DWL002 itself will have a likely range of around 400-500 kilometers and is comprised of three stations that operate in tandem, placed kilometers apart. According to Defense News, the DWL002’s range would allow it “cover all of Taiwan and the disputed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, but [it] is not within range of U.S. military bases on Okinawa. Nor can it reach the Philippines.”

The DWL002, if it lives up to its touted capabilities, would severely hamper stealth fighter-based attempts at establishing aerial control over Chinese territory provided Chinese air defense systems are operational. Anti-stealth radar technology would play an important role in allowing the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to effectively counter parts of the United States AirSea Battle operational concept, for example. Part of the effectiveness of AirSea Battle relies on the U.S. Air Force and Navy deploying long-range stealth-based air platforms. With the DWL002 ELS, Chinese air defense systems would be significantly more effective at detecting hostile stealth aircraft. Another feature of the DWL002 that has drawn some attention from the Chinese media — notably the Global Times, according to WantChinaTimes— is its ability to track aircraft without notifying pilots that they have been detected by radar. Furthermore, according to Vassily Kashin, senior research fellow at the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, a Moscow-based think tank, the DWL002’s capabilities are not being exaggerated and pose a serious threat to stealth platforms.

The DWL002 system is not only operational, this is sold and operating in Turkmenistan . This will detect the USAF flying tankers and EWCS to guide Chinese planes and VLTAAMs to take down the tankers and EWCs

China develops some quantum radar by 14th research insitute (which is the biggest military radar supplier in China) and have already conducted field test that succesfully detects objectes 100 km aways.

There is huge gulf between publishing research papers/proposals/pretty PPTs/screaming like the West do and being quiet and get things done like China do.

Two different approaches, and two different outcomes, one is all talks, and the other is all done.

China is definitely far more advanced than the west in this regard.

And BTW, before you discredit SCMP, SCMP is a big news source in HK, and in this case they merely pick up this news from China’s news paper Science Daily:

中国研制成功首部量子雷达-新闻-科学网

As for Science Daily, it is a publisher co-owned by:

State commission of Science and Technology

China Academy of Science

State commission of science and technology for national defense industry

So the news cannot be MORE OFFICIAL.

Just get used to China being leading in more and more fronts, eventually maybe all fronts.

As for propaganda accusations, well, lets be honest:

In the West, weaponary concepts/proposals/schemes have been shown-off decades before they even get a working prototype if ever.

While in China, you can barely find any official news/papers on things that even it is about to enter service.

Basically this give you an idea who is WAY BETTER at propaganda, afterall the west media have been very talkative, but being that way certainly have its merits, since that will giving the west a lot of funnny bragging rights on things they dont and may never have, hehehe.

New Chinese Navy Destroyer Can Best Japan, India And Maybe The United States

Ralph Jennings
, Contributor Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.

The expansion of China’s military is no secret. Beijing raised the People’s Liberation Army budget by 7% this year, typical of its annual increases. Late last year it floated one aircraft carrier into the open Pacific and in April unveiled a domestically built aircraft carrier, its second in the fleet. On Wednesday the PLA navy announced it had finished work on a destroyer warship that can displace 10,000 tons, according to the state-run China Daily news website.

This is a particularly major advance. The extra-hardy, domestically built destroyer not only helps Beijing double down on its disputed claims in the East and South China seas but also gives it new deterrent weight against its most powerful Asian rivals such as Japan and India.

The destroyer launched Wednesday in Shanghai with air defense, anti-missile, anti-ship and anti-submarine weapons that can outdo India’s Project-15B Visakhapatnam destroyers, according to Indian media reports. India's ship can displace 8,200 tons of military hardware when fully armed and can carry 50 missiles. China’s destroyer, a type of ship that can start battles as well as block shots fired first, may also outrank Japan’s destroyers, two maritime experts told me on Thursday.

"They are making serious advances," says Euan Graham, international security director with the Lowy Institute for International Policy in Sydney. "If you throw enough money at any problem you gain ground."

In 2000 Japan’s defense agency maritime unit began building Atago-class destroyers with load displacement of more than 10,000 tons. The Japanese destroyer is equipped to handle the Aegis combat system developed in the United States to track and guide offensive missiles.

More on Forbes: China's Efforts To Increase Pressure On Old Foe Taiwan Are Backfiring

"The Ageis system on the Japanese destroyers, that’s an American system, so we know at least that is proven," Graham says. "I think the point is the Chinese are newer to the game here."

Speaking of the United States, China’s ship dubbed a Type 055 may also be able to vie with U.S. naval vessels, says Alexander Huang, strategic studies professor at Tamkang University in Taiwan. American Arleigh Burke guided missile destroyers are built for weight displacement of 8,315 to 9,200 tons. “In a similar class, Japan’s is bigger than the Arleigh Burke, the Republic of Korea had one that’s bigger than Japan’s and now China has built a bigger one,” Huang says. It can independently do combat in the air and water, he says.

China probably plans neither to attack anyone nor be attacked. The Communist leadership prefers talks by a wide margin to anchor its claims to the South China Sea. However, Beijing resents Indian influence in nearby waters. Its vessels sometimes venture close to parts of the Japanese-controlled East China Sea that Beijing calls its own, but analysts usually call those forays PR moves to remind everyone that China hasn’t given up.

The Chinese destroyer, set now for sailing and mooring tests, represents a “milestone” for the PLA, China Daily says. It’s bigger than China's previous Type 052D destroyers, which could displace 7,000 tons and “observers…call it one of the largest and mightiest of its kind in the world,” claims the site.

To what extent are the 055 major phased array radars advanced? About second in the world!
2017-08-19 12:21:44 164 ℃
Type 055 missile destroyer ship is the core of future China naval fleet, after the completion of the 055 will be the most powerful fighting forces in the world of the destroyer, don't get me wrong, this is not Chinese boasting, but the Navy's assessment conclusion. Evaluation on type 055 from the U.S. Naval Intelligence Bureau, the Bureau issued a regular Chinese naval military report, the latest report of a detailed analysis of 055 Chinese Navy warships, the report said Chinese 055 class destroyer beyond Ali Burke III of America's new Zumwalt class destroyer and construction plan the destroyer, to become the world's most advanced air defense ship.

0H5x4bF0dA

The US military believes that China's type 055 destroyer has a strong single ship integrated combat capability, with far, medium, and near three layers of soft and hard weapons, early warning nets and attack fire nets. The biggest feature is the integrated RF system, the integration of the antenna, the main mast integrates various types of radar antenna and detectors, such as JIDS system, integrated data link system and broadband high-speed data transmission system and so on, so that the ship has a strong ability of communication and information. This technology represents the highest level of shipborne radar electronic equipment in our country and even in the world, and is the first warship in the world to adopt this technology. To realize the integration of radar, radar, electronic warfare, information integration and communication system in one, and for the first time the ship battle electronic equipment through the embedded open system to form a multi sensor fusion of organic whole, operational efficiency is greatly improved, creating a ship electronic equipment by independent combat system to combat. The success of this system will further consolidate China's maritime warning, combat core competence, of great significance, is worthy of the name "sea powers".

0H5x4bxfbM

The electronic radar system of the destroyer 055 is also the most advanced and powerful in the world. In November 21, 2016, Chinese Dianke group fourteenth Institute of foreign propaganda platform are reported the production of a shipborne radar equipment for detailed arrangements. Also disclosed the shipborne radar equipment is one of China's new generation of destroyers of the core subsystem, will greatly enhance the Chinese next-generation destroyer combat capability, to change the meaning of the Chinese Navy from light blue to dark blue, the radar also known affectionately as "star of the sea".

0H5x4bqqlA

Picture: Wuhan Ship Research Institute 055 destroyers onshore model for electromagnetic compatibility testing of ship superstructure, masts and bridge around the comprehensive central will install a dual band active phased array radar.

According to the relevant military experts, 055 large missile destroyer active phased array radar ship equipped with the 346B type is improved 052D destroyer type 346A radar, using liquid cooling structure. According to the Zhuhai airshow China Dianke group experts revealed that the performance of the 346B radar, regardless of the detection distance, fire channel, interception or accuracy, anti-interference ability and so on, are far more than the current AN/SPY-1D aegis radar.

0H5x4b3vHa

055, the destroyer's integrated mast also has a small phased array radar, an active phased array radar system with two different bands, which constitutes the capability of DBR (dual band radar). Dual band system from a wide area search radar responsible for long-range search, by the multi function radar tracking precision for identification and weapon fire control, the two complement each other, complement each other, meet all functions of radar ship needs, including the air sea search, early warning, air and missile defense, short-range defense, ground combat on the sea.

0H5x4bomzO

This is the world's most cutting-edge technology of shipborne radar at present, can provide both mass and ability to lead long distance target detection and missiles, leading the world's major powers generation, leading Japan more than 10 years of technical level, this is a brilliant crystal China Naval Technology development.

0H5x4b2F6P

The United States was also planning to carry dual band radar at the start of the development of the DDG1000 Walter class destroyer. Because the S band passive phased array radar SPY-1 belongs to focus on long-distance intercepted aegis missile terminal guidance, lack of ability, need special collocation illumination radar. Therefore, the U.S. military decided to adopt a dual band system on a new generation of shipborne radar, and according to plan, CVN-78 Ford aircraft carrier and Burke III destroyer will be equipped with DBR dual band radar.

In order to save $20 million, in June 2010, the U.S. Department of defense decided to cancel the DDG1000 destroyer's VSR radar system, leaving only the MFR radar. Such an important radar is cancelled, don't say the dual band, DDG1000 destroyer can be counted as a "Aegis", has become a very controversial.

0H5x4btRte

Zumwalt class of maritime targets strike capability is not outstanding, in the face of the warship equipped with anti-ship missiles and submarines, the ship has no advantage at all, on the Chinese naval surface and submarine threats are not great. Positioning Zumwalt class is the result of the strategy by the sea, in the absence of symmetric adversary, Zumwalt class 155 mm gun on land to strike, the gun has a range of 150 nautical miles, bully the small OK, but there is a complete radar warning system for Chinese opponent, zhumuwoerte close to the land only beaten a.

Don't be so China audience DDG1000 fantastic appearance scared, which was a few months ago in the Panama Canal coastal warships, really advanced, operational capability is quite powerful, but its air defense capabilities may be less than 055 Chinese large destroyer.

0H5x4be3vJ

Next to China 055 destroyers and a new radar competition is the United States plans for the development of the Ali Burke III destroyer, the ship will install AN/SPY-6 (V) dual band active phased array radar system, its search capability is currently installed in the Burke type IIA on AN/SPY-1 radar 30 times. The US Burke III destroyer, carrying dual band radars, was scheduled for budget in 2016, and would take at least three years to build from the construction to the launching service later than China's 055 destroyer.

0H5x4bC9Sw

Therefore, in the dual band phased array radar and universal common vertical launch system equipped with integrated RF technology, the 055 destroyers in 2019 before entering the Navy, China will become the world's first DBR dual band phased array with large destroyer countries, while the United States, Ribek III will have to wait two years to launch DDG1000. Zhumuwoerte, don't look at other dream, it is not the air defense destroyer is a big problem. As for the Japanese ships aegis, without the United States they are not what. This means that China has surpassed the US Navy in large air defense destroyers.

As a result, the radar technology level of China's type 055 large missile destroyer is currently ranked second in the world, only the first temporary shortage of space and time!

It is a commonplace topic that how the Chinese Navy's combat capability is, and what position it is in the global navy. Even in the Russian naval expedition to Syria, the old equipment, no offshore supply ships, lack of training, lax discipline and so on, fully demonstrated in front of the world after the evaluation, Chinese naval combat the second highest in the world, there is some real name to feel. Especially in recent years, the navy has opened a "golden age" for large-scale shipbuilding, and the manufacture of dumpling making vessels, and even a lot of small partners, created the illusion that the Chinese navy is about to overtake the US navy. Of course, the American Navy's excuse for asking for money has also contributed to the ambition of countless military fans. But has the US Navy really entered a recession? Is the gap between the US and the Navy really being rapidly compensated by China's military industry? That's not the case! According to the United States in 2017 for ship plans to build the next 30 years, from the beginning of 2017 30 years, the United States will pass into more than $400 billion, including the construction of 6 ships, super aircraft carriers hundreds of warships and support vessels. American Burke class destroyer

From the table below, you can see, if not an aircraft carrier ship more than a year we discharge the total U.S. ships made a huge monster, only the displacement of nearly 10000 tons of Arleigh Burke class aegis destroyer, will build two year; this is not the volume ratio 054A frigate the big 30% LCS, "small ship is in". As for the extremely high cost of nuclear submarines, countless fans praised Russia since the end of the cold war of 20 years, to build 3 ships of the ash tree class attack submarine and 2 ship Borey class strategic nuclear submarine, which had two count this year was launched; and the people's Liberation Army since 2008. But there are also two type 7 aircraft put into service; but in accordance with U.S. shipbuilding plan, each year they will build 2 aircraft performance ahead of Virginia class attack submarines and at least 1 generations, even from the beginning of 2026, to build a cost of up to $13 billion 300 million a year, only cheaper than the aircraft carrier Columbia class strategic nuclear submarine 600 million dollars. This is not an American class amphibious assault ship with a displacement of 60 thousand tons......

The Burke class aegis radar

Indeed, back in 2015 the PLA 12 ships total displacement of 44 thousand tons of various types of combat ships, even if we ship quantity is in under the dumplings, don't let's go to consider US ships in the technical performance of the gap, even look at the ship size, we do not have any confidence in the United States can look bad.

But all of this, in recent years, in April 26th the first domestic aircraft carrier and the June 28th Chinese type 055 destroyer million tons of water, which has undergone tremendous changes. It was not until then that the Chinese Navy began to have the possibility of theoretically overtaking the United States navy. Although looked at the United States Navy fleet of 10 nuclear powered aircraft carriers, 22 missile cruisers 62 aegis destroyers, and more than 50 attack submarines, in 30 years we can catch up with is unimaginable achievement......

The strategic nuclear submarine of the North Russian God class

But even so, we still need not improperly belittle oneself. First of all, no matter how strong the United States, can not deny Chinese naval strength has climbed to second of the world's reality; secondly, in the just launched type 055 destroyers, we can see too many surprises, but also can see China Navy glorious future. Just under the 055 destroyer, the PLA was completely independent of the first building million ton ship, is currently the most advanced technology of the people's Liberation Army, the comprehensive performance of the strongest warship. Its advanced technology, even far beyond the Soviet type 1143.6 heavy aircraft carrying cruisers based on improved the first domestic aircraft carrier.

055 of the integrated mast

From the type 055 destroyer ship launching ceremony, we can clearly see a huge, neat mast, and the world will use 10000 ton ship, the electronic system is very complex, integrated into a mast Li, this level of the electronics industry, currently the world's only us can achieve; and the loaded dual band active phased array radar radar, is the American dream, but at present only liberation uniforms to the artifact on ships. In the picture, this section of the United States Raytheon produced dual band active phased array radar introduction, fully illustrates the type of equipment in air defense, antimissile, protection of their own warships and other aspects of the role. But this picture is currently only as a US Navy fantasy, at least in the next 30 years to build a ship plan, we have not seen the American ships have this ability, the legend of the Arleigh Burke type 3 aegis destroyers, because of ship design, to complete the installation of this system......

In the introduction of the launching ceremony of the PLA 055 destroyer, it is like the American army and has a strong anti missile capability. This shows that the 055 above equipped with anti-aircraft missiles, not only is the Red Sea 9/9B so simple, very likely, and the U.S. military standard 3 anti missile interceptor as a new type of domestic air defense missile weapon system, has been integrated into the 055. The sea eagle, the 18 Dongfeng 10 and other new missiles, it will become the 055 weapon. This is not a comprehensive electric propulsion system that is likely to be used by the 055 fleet". (this article by "daily." the original, reproduced please indicate the source)

It can be said that this ship to a certain extent, is the history of mankind the combat capability of the strongest destroyers, also is his service, just let the soldier soldier felt for the first time, countless people mouth beyond the military is really possible to do!

China's launched its first Type 055 destroyer today—the most advanced surface combatant Beijing has ever designed and fielded. Pictures of the visually striking ship whipped around the internet, with many people being surprised that China was producing such an impressive warship. The truth is, the Type 055 is the J-20 stealth fighter/interceptor of the high-seas, and it not only is a showcase of China's rapidly evolving surface warfare and weapons development capabilities, but also a sign of what Beijing's overall maritime strategy will be in the not so distant future.

When it comes to the Chinese Navy, the Type 055 is very roughly analogous to something between the American Ticonderoga class cruiser a Zumwalt class destroyer, in that it has similar capabilities and size to the Ticonderoga class, but it also packs new technologies that will impact the future of Chinese surface combatant design like the Zumwalt class does. The ship's stealthy exterior and its enclosed sensor mast are situated in between the latest Arleigh Burke class destroyers and the Zumwalt class developmentally speaking.

The Type 055 could just as easily be classified as a cruiser than as a destroyer. It's 590 feet long and displaces between 10,000 and 12,000 tons. That is 81 feet longer and up to nearly 2,500 tons greater than America's latest Arleigh Burke class destroyers, making it closer in size to the US Navy's Ticonderoga class cruisers than anything else. It also packs a Ticonderoga class's magazine size, with 128 vertical launch cells available. The Arleigh Burke class has 96. These cells will be stuffed with land attack (YJ-18), and anti-ship missiles (YJ-12), as well as anti-submarine rockets (CY series). Yet, just like America's Ticonderoga class cruisers, area air defense and slinging surface-to-air missiles will likely be this ship's overwhelming mission set and it's specially outfitted with a high-end sensor package that will exceed in this role.

This new ship relies on a dual-band radar system similar in concept to the one that was supposed to be deployed on the DDG-1000 Zumwalt class and that is currently equipping the USS Gerald R. Ford. Two sets of active phased array radars, one being the larger S-band arrays on the vessel's super structure and the other being the smaller set of X-band arrays in the ship's enclosed sensor mast, equip the ship. The S-Band system is used for long range search and track, while the much more sensitive X-band system is used for tracking smaller, stealthier and high-speed objects with greater fidelity at lesser ranges. There are cross-over in capabilities between the two sensor arrays, which also adds to redundancy. No other ship in China's inventory possesses such a high-end radar system.

The ship is likely to be primarily armed with a sea-going version of the HQ-9 long-range surface-to-air missile, as well as the HQ-16 medium-range SAM, and possibly quad-packed DK-10As. The DK-10A is based on the PL-12 air-to-air missile, and would act as a intermediate-range air defense missile roughly similar to the U.S. Navy's RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM). As time goes on, these ships will likely field other air defense missiles, like weapons capable of swatting down endoatmospheric hypersonic vehicles or China's own mid-course ballistic missile defense interceptors. These more exotic missiles could make good use of the ship's dual-band radar, advanced combat system, and plentiful VLS farm.

The ship's anti-submarine warfare capabilities will also surpass the capacity of other Chinese warships, including space for two helicopters (eventually likely ASW variants of the Z-18) in its rear hangar and an expanded flight deck size. The ship will also likely use towed and variable depth sonar for hunting submarines, and will have its own torpedoes and rocket assisted torpedoes to prosecute marauding underwater threats.

A H/PJ-38 130mm main gun and a H/PJ-11 30mm close-in weapon system (CIWS) round out the ship's major armaments. It will also likely receive China's "FL-3000N" version of the RIM-116 rolling-airframe missile system mounted in a turreted canister on the rear of the ship's superstructure. This combined with the 30mm CIWS will give the big surface combatant a strong close-in defensive capability against sea-skimming missiles, low-flying aircraft, and small boats.

These ships are rumored to be equipped with integrated electric powerplants, whereby the ship's turbines provide electricity to drive electric motors that then turn the ship's screws—a major advancement in Chinese warship design if confirmed. They also feature the latest in electronic warfare capabilities and the most advanced mission systems deployed by the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) to date.

Regardless of the Type 055's multi-mission capabilities, these ships are being built to be the preeminent escort for the Chinese carrier battle group, acting in a similar role as the Ticonderoga class cruiser does today. This will include being the command and control hub for the battle group's anti-air warfare operations. In this role the Type 055 will fulfill something of a missing link within the People's Liberation Army Navy's order of battle, with the Type 052D destroyer being the most capable surface combatant before it—but one that is far more limited in capability and weapons capacity than the Type 055.

With the PLAN slated to field a fleet of at least four aircraft carriers in the coming decade, the reason for building four of these ships at this time is clear. There will be at least one for each carrier battle group, and when the carriers are not sailing, these ships will be able to show the flag by themselves far from home, and bringing high-end multi-mission and command and control capabilities to smaller PLAN task forces. It is also likely that another four Type 055s will be built at some time following the initial batch, as China's aircraft carrier fleet expands.

In the end, China's new Type 055 destroyers are another indication of the amazing strides the country has made in their attempt to reach some sort of parity in multiple domains of warfare with the U.S. and especially its regional allies. That's not to say these ships and their weapons are as capable as their American counterparts, because in many ways they are not. Even China's shipbuilding capabilities are rumored to be lacking, especially in terms of quality, when compared to their American counterparts. The level of integration between their ship's sensors and weapons, the reliability of their missiles—especially when countermeasures are present—and their missile's overall performance abilities remain a question mark as well.

But that's not really the point. The point is that China is preparing for a future of major naval power projection, with this vessel class sailing closely alongside their aircraft carriers—two of which are built. Together they are the most visible centerpieces of a much more aggressive and farther reaching naval strategy. This may not leave the US Navy shaking in its boots, but when it comes to regional powers such as India and Japan, that is a different story. These ships and the carriers they will support will likely end up having a persistent presence in the South China Sea, Taiwan Strait, Indian Ocean, and East China Sea—all places where tensions are high and territorial issues are top of mind.

Got to hand it to China, they sure know how to launch a warship don't they?

The Type 055 is also another signal that China can no longer be viewed as a potential adversary living in a perpetual "catch-up mode" technologically speaking. The Chinese are increasingly doing things their own way and even tacking big independent technological risks, such as incorporating a dual-band radar into a picket ship before the US does. So the Chinese military, and the industry that supports it, still be copycats when it comes to defense concepts, but increasingly less so in terms of discreet hardware and integrated weapons systems themselves.

As time goes on, this change will leave the US and its allies reacting to Chinese military developments more than in the past. And China's weapons developments, which were largely based on questionable facsimiles of US or Russian systems in the past, are now becoming far less predictable and as a result are more concerning.

Navy Needs New Servers for Aegis Cruisers and Destroyers After Chinese Purchase of IBM Line

The Navy needs new servers for its upgraded Aegis Combat System after the current IBM line was sold to Chinese computer maker Lenovo.

The $2.1 billion sale closed in October and made Lenovo the number three server maker in the world.

IBM shedding its server business creates a security concern for the U.S. Navy, which included the company’s x86 BladeCenter HT server in its Aegis Technical Insertion (TI) 12. The TI-12 hardware upgrades, along with Advanced Capability Build (ACB) 12 software upgrades, compose the Aegis Baseline 9 combat system upgrade that combines a ballistic missile defense capability with anti-air warfare (AAW) improvements for the Navy’s guided missile cruiser and destroyer fleets.

“The Department of Homeland Defense identified security concerns with the IBM Blade Center sale and placed restrictions on federal government procurement of Lenovo Blade Center server products,” a Navy spokesman told USNI News.

The major military concern is the servers could be compromised through routine maintenance or the information could be accessed remotely by Chinese government agents, The Wall Street Journal reported last year.

The Program Executive Office for Integrated Warfare Systems’ Aegis program office “is evaluating alternate processing solutions to mitigate the impact of the IBM Blade Center sale” in conjunction with the Department of Defense Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States Mitigation Development and Compliance Monitoring Team.

“We do not expect any significant Aegis schedule or cost impacts,” the Navy spokesman added.

Aegis Combat System manufacturer Lockheed Martin is participating in the effort to identify a replacement, company spokeswoman Rashi Ratan told USNI News.

“Options do exist; however, it is a matter of matching specified requirements to available technologies, conducting environmental qualifications and integration testing of those options, in conjunction with the Navy, to ultimately select an appropriate course of action,” she said.

U.S. companies, including Hewlett Packard, Dell and Cisco, make servers the service could use to replace the IBM products.
