955A型是俄海军现役的主力战略核潜艇955型“北风之神”级的升级改进型，而弗拉基米尔大公号则是955A型的首艇。弗拉基米尔大公号核潜艇在许多方面或多或少都与前辈存在差异，这其中尤以指挥塔造型、艇艏鱼雷发射管和尾舵等部分的改动最为明显。

弗拉基米尔大公号外观上的另一大变化是其尾舵。与955型相比，弗拉基米尔大公号将垂直尾舵上的移动面转移到了水平尾舵上来，这个改进可以改善核潜艇的水下可操控性。
