Why Filipino nurse had to be sacked

The online comments made by a Filipino nurse are not compatible with the standards of behaviour expected of hospital employees, said the Health Ministry in a statement yesterday, a day after Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) sacked him.

"The ministry expects all healthcare professionals, whether local or foreign, in our public institutions to uphold the values of respect for those they serve, professionalism, integrity and social responsibility," said its spokesman.

Mr Ello Ed Mundsel Bello was dismissed last Friday for posting three offensive comments concerning Singapore and religion on his Facebook and Google Plus pages last year.

His disparaging remarks came to the attention of TTSH after more offending posts made on Facebook this year went viral a few days ago.

In these posts, he allegedly called Singaporeans "loosers" (losers), and said he was "praying that disators (disasters) will strike Singapore".

However, Mr Bello claimed that his account had been hacked and that he had made a police report. When contacted, police said investigations are ongoing, and they will provide an update later.

The Philippine Embassy in Singapore told The Sunday Times it is advising Mr Bello on the probe.

Mr Bello's online comments had riled some netizens, who complained to the hospital. A Facebook group, "Petition to deport Edz Ello the Filipino", has amassed more than 700 members.

Similar offensive comments on social media had previously led to some people losing their jobs.

Why is a foreigner that hates sinkees and plan to do harm to sinkees allow to remain here? Can the Minister answer this question please?

Saying nasty things about a country is not a crime. Singapore is a democratic nation where free speech is allowed and is even encouraged.

There is no valid reason for revoking PR or employment passes just because the recipient lacks gratitude. If failure to show gratitude was an offense, then 40% of sinkies should be deported for voting against the PAP despite the fact that LKY and LHL have done so much to make their lives better.

Free speech is allowed? U are a bigger idiot than I thought u were. .

You obviously don't understand the meaning of "freedom of speech" which makes you a far bigger idiot.

Boss, you sure or not... "free speech is allowed and is even encouraged"? Wu ya boh?

Encourage? Where?

Free speech? Where?

Feedback and dialogue sessions are held regularly by the PAP. In fact there was a whole series of dialogue sessions called the Singapore conversation where free speech was actively encouraged.

Then there is the speakers' corner at Hong Lim where all sorts of rubbish has been spewed by opposition loonies and none of them has been taken to task for what they said despite the fact that many of the accusations bordered on libel and slander.

Very few countries have a speakers corner. Singapore and the UK stand out in this regard.

Attn PM Lee, DPM Teo:

Mr. Lee,

Last year you said that you decided that Singapore still needs the ISA to deal with potential threats to national security. Now one such threat has appeared. As you know, former TTSH radiographer, Philippine national Ed Mundsel Bello Ello has posted Islamophobic hate speech using his Google+ and Facebook accounts, and anti-Singaporean hate speech using his Facebook account. I will not repeat what he posted here; there has already been enough publicity given to this case that everyone in Singapore would know what he wrote by now. You can refer to the attached images here in case for some reason you were unaware of what he had written. There can be absolutely no doubting his guilt here: TTSH fired him from his job after he admitted that he did indeed post those comments, and Health Minister Gan has openly said that his comments are unacceptable. Also, it has been a week, and Edz Ello has admitted posting those comments. What is taking the police so long to investigate this case, when his confession to his superiors at TTSH have already provided damning evidence against him?

Mr. Lee, don’t expect us to “forgive him and just move on” from this. Edz Ello’s comments have stirred up a hornet’s nest online. While many Filipinos have commendably come forward to denounce him, many have also come forward to show solidarity with and support him. Considering that Edz Ello had not only hurt the feelings of our Muslim brothers and sisters by insulting Islam, he had also called for his fellow Filipinos to seize control of Singapore, called for Singaporeans to be killed and had even openly tried to incite a communal riot between Filipinos and Singaporeans, the fact that even one Filipino would come forward to support him is deeply troubling and totally unacceptable.

Mr. Lee, you have repeatedly said that the government and the members of parliament are the servants of the people. Both you and DPM Teo are also former general officers in the military.I don’t think I need to remind you that the SAF pledge says that the SAF are the protectors of Singapore and her people. As such, we the people of Singapore expect you to serve our interests and needs and protect our people from those who are jealous of our wealth, stability and success and hate us for it and seek to do our country and our people harm because of it.

Mr. Lee, there is only one acceptable solution to this matter. On behalf of the people of Singapore, we call upon you to invoke the ISA and detain Mr. Ed Mundsel Ello Bello without trial indefinitely as a clear and present danger to the national security of Singapore and the safety of her people. During the Presidential Election debate of 2011, Mr. Tan Jee Say had claimed that the ISA’s main purpose was to intimidate the PAP’s critics, something that Mr. Tony Tan vehemently denied. Mr. Lee, now is the best time to prove President Tony Tan correct and Mr. Tan Jee Say wrong; detaining Edz Ello without trial will prove it.

This is not Freedom of speech...why they are slow in bringing him to court...is for the reasons we all know..if this was Roy Ngeng making these disparaging remarks on this "longanisa" in the same vein......will you cry " FREEDOM OF SPEECH"??
