Dr Tony Tan

SINGAPORE: Presidential hopeful Tony Tan said it would be a "grave mistake" to phase out manufacturing in Singapore.
He described manufacturing as a key pillar of Singapore’s economy as it complements the services industry, generates skills, and diversifies the markets.
He said: "I think it would be a grave mistake to try and phase manufacturing out, we will suffer for it. Our economy will be less resilient, less diversified. There will be fewer options for our young people and Singapore will lose."
Dr Tan was speaking to reporters after a dialogue with 100 members of the Singapore Manufacturers’ Federation.
He said he had requested for the briefing as part of his outreach efforts during his presidential campaign.
Federation president George Huang said he and his members were impressed with Dr Tan’s knowledge and understanding of the manufacturing industry and the economy, and that Dr Tan is "more than able to discharge the duties of a President".
Fellow presidential hopeful Tan Jee Say had previously said that Singapore should not promote manufacturing because it requires a lot of land and labour, and suggested that Singapore should instead promote its services sector.

Please explain how Singapore can manufacture goods as cheap as what China or developing countries can produce?
Compete with China and developing countries on cost?

There are manfacturing and manufacturing.
Plastic pails and dustbins ?
or
Cancer busting drugs ... or ... minute robotic cameras that navigate arteries.
There will be risks
but
I'd love to see us doing those things.
Impossible if we quit manufacturing.

Exactly. What is TT talking about?
Does TT dont understand how / what manufacturing plant look like?
It is totally appalling to hear something like that from a presidency candidate-to-be.
I agree with TSJ!

Tan Jee Say also has this to say about Temasek:

Tan Jee Say: disband Temasek Holdings
Meanwhile, former civil service high-flier Tan Jee Say, who was also at the Elections Department on Friday to collect his Certificate of Eligibility, elaborated on his previous remarks that he would "disband" Temasek Holdings if elected into the country's highest office.
He said, shares owned by Temasek Holdings in government-linked companies should be sold to encourage entrepreneurship.
There will be no shortage of companies keen to buy out Temasek as the private sector has got "enormous experience, capacity to take over," said Tan.
He added that the sale could be opened to both local and foreign buyers "to give Singaporeans a good deal" and that proceeds can be invested in infrastructure, especially in education and health.
But this should be done "over a long time frame" because Temasek's stake in the Singapore economy could be almost 60 per cent, he said, noting that it "would be very drastic to disband immediately".
"I do see disbanding as part of my economic philosophy to get the Government out of business, because it is not the business of Government to be in business," he stressed.
