The pictures, which were taken after the hijacking and before the bullet-riddled bus was removed from the street, were circulated on the social networking site as well as other online forums.

The emergence of the pictures has stoked anger over the handling of the crisis, in which eight hostages and the gunman died, and the perceived insensitivity of Philippine authorities in the aftermath of the tragedy.

“They are being asked to explain why they did that act,” the metropolitan Manila district police chief director Leocadio Santiago told ANC television.

“Was it conducted with malice, what was their intention?”

He said those in the photos clearly violated a police rule on proper decorum, and could be demoted pending results of an investigation.

Mr Santiago said three of the police officers had already been identified, while four others were still being sought.

“The Facebook photos are a public document. We can use that for and against them, they can be held accountable for that,” Mr Santiago said.

A sacked police officer hijacked a busload of Hong Kong tourists in the heart of Manila last Monday, in a bid to be cleared of extortion charges and get his job back.

The 12-hour stand-off ended in a botched assault by police with the events aired live around the world on television.

HONG KONG - Tens of thousands of people joined a rally in Hong Kong on Sunday afternoon to demand justice for victims of the Manila hostage bloodbath, as the city's Filipino community staged its own memorials for the dead. Demonstrators voiced their anger over the Philippine government's handling of the siege in the heart of Manila last Monday, which left eight Hong Kong tourists dead.

People in Hong Kong hold a street rally on Sunday to express their grief and anger in the wake of the Manila hostage tragedy and demand justice for the victims. Eight Hong Kong tourists died in last week's bus hijacking and botched rescue.

"It's too late for the governments to do anything, but we hope that, at the very least, the Philippine authorities could tell us the truth," said Daisy Kwong, a telecoms firm project manager. "I cried for hours after watching the tragedy play out live on TV," she said. In a brief speech before the march, Jasper Tsang, president of Hong Kong's Legislative Council, spoke on behalf of the city's 60 lawmakers, expressing shock and sorrow over the incident and extending condolences to the victims of the tragedy and their families.

Tsang said lawmakers had blasted the Philippine authorities for their blunders in handling the crisis. Lawmakers also pressed the Hong Kong government to demand that the Philippine authorities conduct a thorough investigation as soon as possible and strive for direct involvement in the investigation. The sea of demonstrators observed three minutes of silence as they gathered in Victoria Park, many wearing yellow ribbons and carrying white flowers, the traditional Chinese color of mourning.

At around 3 pm, demonstrators began to leave the park and marched towards the Chater Garden in Central district on the island. They held banners in black that had messages such as "deepest condolences to the families of the victims" and "demand a thorough probe into the truth of the incident". Hong Kong police estimated that some 20,000 people poured into Victoria Park and expected more to join the procession during the march.

The organizers said earlier that they expected more than 50,000 people would participate in the march. Members of the city's 200,000-strong Filipino community, the vast majority of which work as low-paid domestic help, have voiced fears of retribution. Rally organizers asked demonstrators not to carry racially charged placards or chant discriminatory slogans. Filipino groups staged their own events on Sunday in remembrance of the victims, including a candlelight vigil.

Philippine vice-consul Val Roque said a text message was sent to members of the community, asking them to "set aside what they are doing" and attend memorial masses on Sunday. Disgraced ex-policeman Rolando Mendoza, armed with an assault rifle, hijacked a busload of Hong Kong tourists on Monday in an apparent bid to win his old job back and be cleared of extortion charges.

Eight tourists and the gunman were killed in the final stages of the 12-hour ordeal, when the police launched an assault on the bus in a drama that unfolded live on television screens around the world. Philippine police said on Sunday they are certain that the Hong Kong tourists were killed by Mendoza, rather than by police bullets during the rescue operation.

Already the hijacker is revered as a hero. If the results show that hostages were killed by the police, Aquino will defend them by saying they did their job, and then give a big smile. If the results show that no hostages were killed by the police, even better, the police will celebrate because they did their job i.e. didn't get themselves killed, Aquino will then say see, we didn't kill any hostages, and then give a big smile. If the Pinoy and HK forensic teams come to different conclusions, all the better, drag it all out and keep smiling, yes we are doing our best, we are committing all our resources, we are conducting a very strigent investigation that will take some time...

In short, others die, we no die, no hurry!

A country has the right to conduct their own inquiry on the overseas death of its citizens. This right is one part of foreign diplomacy. The HK government and citizens have the right to find out the truth.

Actually the best alternative is to assemble an international investigations team. They would be deemed as neutral.

However, as you've point out, the outcome of the finding may be irrelevant. The hongkies have no right to tell the pinoy government what to do with those responsible in the blotched operation. This beyond their jurisdiction.

在香港，曾荫权到目前为止仍能在悲痛与愤怒间维持一种正确的平衡。他同时采取了行动，以减轻针对香港境内大规模菲律宾人口可能产生的负面情绪——这些人大多数是家庭佣工。



在谈及官方帮助伤者和将遗体运返香港的努力时，香港立法会成员刘慧卿(Emily Lau)表示：“我认为（香港政府）这次的反应相当迅速。但遗憾的是阿基诺总统觉得回应香港特首不合常规”。



刘慧卿补充说，这场灾难凸显了“一国两制”制度需要有更多的灵活性。
