Close to 10,000 BMWs in S'pore affected

PETALING JAYA, SINGAPORE - Close to 10,000 BMWs in Singapore will be affected by a global safety recall involving 1.3 million vehicles, The Straits Times reported on Wednesday.
No figures for the number of affected cars in Malaysia were given but owners of 5- and 6-series built between 2003 and 2010 have been advised to send in their vehicles for inspection.
A report on Monday said the cars are being recalled due to a possible fault with the battery cable cover in the boot.
BMW said in a statement that the flaw "can result in the electrical system malfunctioning, the vehicle failing to start and, in some cases, to charring or fire". It added that it was not aware of any accidents or injuries to people due to the problem.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said the recall affects 8,441 5-series and 764 6-series vehicles sold by BMW's authorised distributor here, Performance Motors, according to the Straits Times report.
The report mentioned that the number of parallel imports affected was unclear but is estimated to stand at 520 cars, comprising of 494 5-series and 26 6-series vehicles. The LTA is currently working with BMW to determine exactly how many grey imports are affected .
The report said the figure stands at 9,725 vehicles at the moment, which could make it the biggest recall for BMWs here.
However observers said up to 40 per cent of the affected BMWs may have already been scrapped, the report said.
BMW Group Malaysia managing director Geoffrey Briscoe said no accident or injury had been reported due to the technical fault in Malaysia or abroad
Mr Briscoe said: "Being proactive in this circumstance as well as for our customers' peace of mind, we welcome our customers to visit any of our 15 authorised BMW service centres nationwide to get their vehicles inspected.
"The process will not take longer than 30 minutes and at no cost to the customer," he said yesterday.

Briscoe said those who bought the 5- and 6-series models built within that period through unauthorised or "grey" importers should also have their vehicles checked immediately at an authorised BMW service centre.
Fewer than 1 per cent of the cars BMW has so far inspected for the issue have exhibited the problem, a BMW spokesman said.
So far, the spokesman said, there have been no reports of fires.
