STOMPer Silvia Lim was shocked to find herself stuck in a gigantic crowd at Tanjong Pagar MRT station yesterday (Jul 1). She later found out that it was because of a heavy downpour that commuters refused to move out of the station.

In an email to STOMP today (Jul 2), the STOMPer says:

“As usual I was at Tanjong Pagar MRT Station on my way to work yesterday morning. When I was walking up the stairs, I wondered what had happened as I was struck in a gigantic crowd of commuters.

“I could hardly walk up the stairs. There were no announcements being made that we should use other exits.

“I thought that there was some terrorist being caught with a grenade, or that MRT staff were tracking the number of people who were having a fever because of H1N1, that’s why the passage way was blocked.

“Lastly, when I squeezed myself out of the crowd, I discovered that the massive human jam was because of the heavy downpour outside. Many commuters did not bring their umbrellas and so they refused to move out of the shelter.”

STOMPer Growiser found himself stuck in a massive human jam at Tanjong Pagar MRT station this morning due to the heavy rain. He wonders why no announcements were made to inform commuters so they could have used other exits.

He reports:

"I took these photos in Tanjong Pagar MRT station this morning at 8.44am.

"Because of the heavy rain, commuters refused to get out of the station, resulting in a human jam.

"SMRT could have announced over the PA system that there is massive congestion at Peck Seah Street exit and at least commuters can consider using other exits at the station.

"While I was struck there for more than five minutes, there was no announcement at all.

"Things could turn very ugly if for example, Mas Selamat's friends had struck with a grenade.

"Maybe a smoke grenade or thunderflash is sufficient to create fear, confusion and stampede."

I was also quietly satisfied that we realised our vision of reaching the 1984 Swiss standard of living last year. In 1984, we had set this as a target to be achieved by 1999, but we missed it by one year because of the crisis.
